SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Lauren Matias totaled 14 kills on 34 swings while sophomore libero Malia Bolko picked up a match-high 20 digs, but UC Davis could not contain Cal Poly senior Taylor Gruenewald, falling by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 25-20 sweep in a Big West Conference women's volleyball season finale at Mott Athletics Center Tuesday night.
The Aggies finish their season at 14-15 overall and 7-9 in conference, placing in a tie for fifth in the Big West standings. The Mustangs improve to 18-9 for the year and finish third in the league with an 11-5 mark.
Matias, the lone UC Davis player in double-figure offense, hit .324 overall with just three attacking errors. Sophomore Brianna Karsseboom added seven kills on 23 attempts, while three other players posted four kills each. Matias also shared the team lead in blocks with seniors Aima Eichie and Kendall Walbrecht with three.
Gruenewald hit 12 kills with only one miscue for a .524 clip, while sophomore Adlee Van Winden and junior Raeann Greisen broke double digits in offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior middle blocker Savannah Nieman added another eight kills and a .583 average for Cal Poly. Libero Katherine Brouker posted 14 digs, helping the Mustangs take a 63-47 advantage in that category.
Matias had all four of her first-set kills in an 8-6 start for the Aggies, before Niemen scored two kills and a block in a run of five straight to put Cal Poly on top by a 13-8 margin. The Aggies challenged to within a two-point deficit as late as 19-17 on a Kelechi Ohiri kill, but could not equalize. Greisen notched three kills in the final four points to propel her team to a 1-0 match lead.
Greisen continued to pound away in the early part of the second set, boosting the Mustangs to a 10-4 start. Karsseboom then responded with three kills to cut the margin to 10-8, then Walbrecht and Eichie teamed up for back-to-back blocks to equalize at 14-14. However, Cal Poly outscored its guest by an 11-2 margin the rest of the way to hold a two-set match edge at the break. The Aggies hit just .141 and were outkilled by a 30-20 margin in the first two sets.
UC Davis polished up its attack to a .308 average and just three errors in the third set, but Cal Poly did likewise with 18 kills and a .385 clip. In similar fashion to the opener, Matias sparked the Aggies to a strong start with four kills in a 6-3 start, only to have Cal Poly respond with a long serving run. Gruenewald had two kills and two block assists (with Van Winden) during a 6-0 stretch that pushed the Mustangs back on top, 9-6. Two more Gruenewald kills made it 13-8, and Cal Poly maintained at least a three-point lead until a Walbrecht kill brought the Aggies to within 20-18. Van Winden put down three kills down the stretch to seal the sweep for the Mustangs.
Tuesday night's match was the career finale for four seniors: Eichie, Walbrecht, setter Sophia Mar and injured outside hitter Allie Wegener.Â
