Nov. 10, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - TJ Shorts II became the final member of UC Davis basketball's incoming class by signing a National Letter of Intent, as announced by head coach Jim Les, on Thursday.
"I chose UC Davis because when I think about my future after basketball, the school speaks for itself with its great academics," said Shorts. "When I was being recruited, UC Davis was very firm that I was their first choice; that made my decision. I'm excited about playing for Coach Les and being a part of the program."
"TJ is a pro typical point guard who makes everyone he plays with better. He is a very good on-ball defender, can create for others and leads like a coach on the floor," Les said.
During his first season at Saddleback College, Shorts averaged a team-high 12.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game for a team that advanced to the State Championship. The Gauchos earned a berth in the title game after defeating Fresno City College for the first time in 13 years in the Final Four.
Led by his season-high 21 points in a victory over Fullerton, the 5-foot-10 guard started all 33 games and scored double figures on 25 occasions. By shooting .492 overall, .800 at the line and .543 from three, the Orange Empire Conference's Most Valuable Player ended the year with All-State first team accolades.
In addition to his scoring average, Shorts led all Gauchos with his free throw and three-point percentages.
Before he enrolled at Saddleback, Shorts led Tustin High School to three consecutive Empire League championships, and semifinal runs at sectionals in two of his last three seasons on campus. In that third year, the Tillers posted a 17-point victory to win a CIF Southern Section crown.
Shorts averaged 17 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, which led conference officials to select him as its Most Valuable Player in his final year at THS. His senior year awards haul also included all-section second team, all-league first team honors and Tustin High Varsity Offensive Player of the Year recognition for the second season in a row.
With Shorts on its roster, Tustin posted a combined record of 80-12 (.870).
In addition to his on-court achievements, he was equally as successful inside the classroom; Shorts graduated with a 3.6 GPA, earned his school's Scholar-Athlete Award all four years and regularly earned Principal's Honor Roll and Superintendent's Honor Roll recognition.
