FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Lauren Matias posted a career-high 34 kills, sophomore libero Malia Bolko amassed a personal-best 31 digs, and junior middle blocker Aima Eichie compiled a career-best .708 hitting average to lead UC Davis to a four-set, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 30-28 win over Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Titan Gym Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies even their overall record to 9-9 and improve to 2-3 in league play. The Titans slip to 6-12 for the year and 1-3 in Big West matches.
Matias committed just seven attacking errors in 59 total attempts for a .458 average. Her 34 kills is the most by any Big West player this year, and the third-highest by an Division I player for a four-set match in 2016. Matias also ties Candy Lench for third on the school's single-match list. Lench, a member of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame and now a coach at Boise State, had matches of 34, 39 and 40 during her senior year of 1992.
Bolko's 31 digs represents the most by any Big West player in a four-set match this season.
Eichie hit 17-for-24 for no errors en route to her .708 clip. That ranks No. 2 on the conference's single-match list for the year, behind only Hawaii's Emily Maglio and her .750 (12-for-16) vs. Pepperdine on September 16. Eichie's percentage also ties for fourth all-time in school history with Sheri Ladrech, who had an identical 17-0-24 line at Humboldt State on October 31, 1992. She also contributed on five of her team's 8.5 blocks.
In all, UC Davis totaled 80 kills – another conference season high – and a .353 average for the match. Sophomore middle Kelechi Ohiri added a 9-1-17 chart for a .471 average. Running this offense was the setting tandem of senior Sophia Mar (41 assists) and sophomore Maddie Merlino (27 assists). In all, the Aggies totaled 78 assists to break a 13-year-old school record for a four-set match. It also stands as yet another Big West best for 2016 thus far.
Sophomore outside hitter Madeline Schneider led CSF with 18 kills and a .385 average while freshman Meagan Carlson chipped in another 10 kills and a .391 success rate.
UC Davis never trailed in its opening-set victory, which Eichie kick-starting the match with two kills and a block en route to a 6-1 start. The junior NPB major hit 6-for-6 in the first set while Matias blasted nine kills on 27 swings. Eichie had back-to-back kills in a 7-1 run that pushed the Aggies to an 18-7 lead. UC Davis maintained at least a seven-point edge in taking a 1-0 match lead.
Matias continued firing with nine kills in the second set. Bolko scooped up 10 digs in the set while UC Davis attacked at a .341 rate. However, the Titans responded with 14 kills and just two errors to tie the match at 1-1. The two teams battled to nine ties, but CSF kept a step ahead down the stretch, never relinquishing the lead after a Katie Roux ace set the board at 17-15.
UC Davis righted its ship after the break with seven team blocks – including three from Eichie – and 10 Bolko digs holding the Titans to just a .079 average. Meanwhile, the offense kept pounding away, with Matias, Eichie and sophomore Emily Allen combining for 17 kills. Allen, who finished the match with a double-double of 10 kills and 14 digs, did most of her damage in the third set: 4-1-7 hitting and five gets on floor defense. The Aggies broke loose from a 10-10 tie to a commanding 18-11 advantage, with Eichie totaling two stuffs and two kills in that run.
The two teams combined for 41 kills in the fourth-set slugfest: 24 by the Aggies and 17 by the Titans. Schneider hit 8-for-12 in the frame as CSF held leads of 15-11, 20-16 and 23-19, threatening to force a rubber set. Schneider's 17th overall kill lifted the Titans to a 24-21 set point before UC Davis scored three straight: an Eichie kill, a Matias service ace, then the equalizer from senior Kendall Walbrecht. UC Davis held three match points at 27-26, 28-27 and 29-28 before Bolko's ace finally closed out the win.
