LONG BEACH, Calif. - Despite a late run in the third set, UC Davis managed just 30 total kills and committed 20 attacking errors in falling to Long Beach State by scores of 25-19, 25-11, 25-23 in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pyramid Saturday night.
The Aggies fall to 12-11 for the year and even their league record to 5-5. The 49ers, tied for the top spot in the Big West standings entering the match, improve to 15-8 overall and 9-1 in conference play.
No UC Davis player broke double digits offensively, with sophomore Emily Allen and freshman Lauren Matias coming out on top with eight kills each. Matias also had four blocks, one fewer than sophomore middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri. Sophomore Brianna Karsseboom chipped in seven kills on 16 swings for a .250 average.
For Long Beach State, senior outside hitter Nele Barber led all players with 18 kills while freshman YiZhi Xue hit 9-for-13 (.692) with five blocks. Sophomore setter Missy Owens distributed 35 assists and engineered her team offense to a .351 hitting average, as the 49ers committed just four attacking errors in each of the three sets.
After slipping into an initial 13-6 hole, UC Davis enjoyed a strong run in the first set to erase the deficit. Senior Kendall Walbrecht served up an ace while Aima Eichie and Ohiri posted three blocks to ignite a 9-1 comeback that eventually equalized at 16-16. Matias split the block for that game-tying point, then Allen and Ohiri each tooled the 49ers to knot the score at 17-17 and 18-18, respectively. However, Xue had a kill and three blocks down the final stretch to stop the surging Aggie offense en route to the set victory. Overall, UC Davis managed just a .091 clip along with five other unforced errors.
The Aggies stumbled offensively out of the gates in the second frame, committing three straight attacking errors to fall behind by a 6-0 hole. Junior middle Ashley Murray had three kills in her team's 8-for-11 offensive start to extend that lead to 13-2. Ohiri scored a kill on an offspeed shot then teamed with senior setter Sophia Mar in a 5-1 Aggie run that closed the gap to 14-7. But LBSU scored six of the next seven to restore its lead to 20-8. UC Davis could not reduce the deficit to single digits for the remainder, totaling just five kills in the entire set. The 49ers hit .462 in the second set, going to the break with a 2-0 match lead.
Long Beach State continued to roll into the third straight, with seven Barber kills translating to a 12-5 lead. Murray put down a pair of blocks to maintain the seven-point edge at 14-7, but a kill and a solo stuff from Ohiri helped bring UC Davis to within four at 15-11. Karsseboom hit back-to-back tools to close the gap to 19-17 and an Allen kill reduced the deficit to a single point at 20-19. The 49ers responded to this comeback with three straight to pad their lead back to 23-19.
Undeterred, UC Davis answered with four unanswered of its own: Allen completed a side out to stop the run then served up two aces to eventually tie the frame at 23-23. Long Beach State called a timeout to regroup, then came out with the final two points to complete the sweep. Xue found an open spot on the Aggie floor for the match-winner.
The Aggies return home on Thursday to host UC Santa Barbara for the first of four November home dates. Match time is 7 p.m.Â
