Aggies enjoy day one success at ITA Regionals

Oct. 13, 2016

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Four Aggie singles players and all four doubles teams remain alive after day one of the 2016 ITA Northwest Regionals, advancing to the round of 32 following a successful opening day for the UC Davis men's tennis team at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

Senior James Wade, junior Everett Maltby, senior Bryce McKelvie, and senior Jesse Ross, all took home singles wins -- three of whom will meet seeded players on Friday. One of two seeded Aggies in the singles bracket, Wade took advantage of a first round bye and posted a, 6-3, 6-0, win over Sacramento State's Kasparas Zemaitelis to move on in the main draw. He is scheduled to meet ninth-seeded Gal Hakak of Washington in tomorrow's action.

The three other UC Davis players had to battle through a pair of victories to advance, as the 17th-seeded McKelvie defeated Oregon's Fabian Soemarno, 6-3, 6-2, then outlasted Santa Clara's Kamran Khan in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. McKelvie is scheduled to face fifth-seeded Filip Bergevi of California -- the nation's No. 77-ranked player -- on Friday.

Coming off a pair of titles at the UC Santa Barbara Classic last week, Maltby continued his hot play on Thursday in Berkeley, posting a pair of straight set wins over Eastern Washington's Flavien Raveau (6-2, 6-2) and San Francisco's 17th-seeded Johan Joenhagen (6-2, 6-1). Maltby, who improved to 9-1 in singles this fall, is scheduled to meet eighth-seeded Jayson Amos of Oregon in the next round.

Finally, Ross advanced into round of 32 with wins over Stanford's Nikita Demir (6-2, 6-0) and 15th-seeded Cormac Clifford of Oregon (7-5, 7-5), and will meet Vincent Rettke of Gonzaga -- who upset 17th-seeded Ryan Marker of San Francisco -- on Friday.

Freshmen David Goulak and Max Pham each posted first-round wins over Gonzaga's Ronzai Saurombe (6-2, 6-2) and Matt Campagna of Saint Mary's (6-2, 2-6, 6-3), respectively, while junior Tommy Lam and senior Eli Whittle posted straight set wins over Pacific Northwest foes Scott Paz of Eastern Washington and John Stormans of Seattle, respective. Unfortunately, all four suffered losses in the round of 64 to end their runs in the bracket.

In doubles, a pair of UC Davis tandems earned first-round byes to automatically advance to Friday's round of 32, while two other teams won their opening day matches to move on. Three of the Aggies' four teams will meet rivals from Pacific, including the seventh-seeded team of McKelvie and Wade (who will meet the Tigers' Nathan Hampton and Tadiwa Chinamo) and the ninth-seeded tandem of Goulak and Lam (who will face Pacific's Miguel Diaz and Ross Watson).

The other two Aggie teams each posted 8-3 wins on Thursday, as Maltby and Pham eliminated Eastern Washington's Raveau and Ricardo Almeida, while Ross and Whittle took down Stanford's Demir and Roy Lederman. Maltby and Pham will meet the Cardinal's ninth-seeded team of Sameer Kumar and Yale Goldberg in the round of 32, while Ross and Whittle are scheduled to meet Pacific's fifth-seeded duo of Alex Gianini and Jose Chamba.

Meanwhile, in Southern California, senior Alec Adamson battled it out with the No. 5 player in the country for three sets, taking the first from Georgia Tech's Christopher Eubanks, 6-4, to jump out to the early lead. Eubanks bounced back quickly, responding with a 6-0 win in the second before clinching the match with a 6-3 victory in the third. Adamson falls into the consolation singles bracket where he will face Drake's Vinny Gillespie in the consolation bracket on Friday (Oct. 14) at 4:00 p.m.

In mixed doubles, Adamson and Long Beach State's Maeva Razakasoa fell to the duo of Oklahoma State's Katarina Adamovic and Purdue's Gergely Madarasz, 6-4.

With rain scheduled for the area on Friday, start times may be affected for day two of play. Updates will be posted on the tournament page at http://www.tennisinformation.com/tourny/5/2/4/4/7/4/7/default.asp as they become available.
