Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- After a thrilling win in a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point, junior Bryce McKelvie tied the match with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles and sophomore Tommy Lam clinched the victory, rallying from a set down to post a three-set triumph at No. 6 and help lift No. 57 UC Davis to a 4-3 upset of No. 33 Pepperdine to close out the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Facing their third nationally ranked opponent in four days, the Aggies improved to 1-2 overall on the season in their first-ever meeting with the perennial powerhouse Waves (0-2).

Playing in only the second singles dual match of his brief UC Davis career, Lam fell behind early when Van Slyke took the opener, 6-2, but rallied back to stave off elimination in a second-set tiebreaker, evening things up with a 7-6 (3) win. In the decisive third, Lam powered ahead, taking the set 6-2 and clinching the upset for the Aggies.

It was a rematch of sorts from the deciding doubles contest earlier in the day as Lam and teammate Bryce McKelvie joined forces to take down Van Slyke and partner Gabriel Sydney in another tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (2), to clinch the doubles point.

Senior Brett Bacharach and junior Eli Whittle gave UC Davis the advantage with a win at No. 2 before Pepperdine evened up the doubles competition with a win at No. 1 by the score of 6-3.

The Waves then posted the first two wins of the day as the scene switched to singles, claiming victory at No. 2 and No. 3 singles before sophomore Everett Maltby tied the match once again with a 7-5, 6-4, win over Tom Hill at No. 5.

A win at the top spot on the ladder put Pepperdine up briefly before McKelvie finished off a, 6-4, 7-5, win over Sydney to knot the match once again, and set up Lam's finale.

UC Davis remains on the road for another busy week, playing four matches in five days beginning on Wednesday (Jan. 27) when the Aggies head to Stockton, Calif., to take on Pacific at 1 p.m. UC Davis then heads to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado (Jan. 29), Abilene Christian (Jan. 30), and host Air Force (Jan. 31), in a trio of matches on the campus of the Air Force Academy.
