UC Davis rolls by Princeton to close GW Invite

Sept. 5, 2015

WASHINGTON - Redshirt freshman middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri contributed on eight of her team's 14 blocks while senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres hammered a match-high 14 kills to help UC Davis claim a 25-12, 25-20, 25-15 sweep of Princeton on the final day of the George Washington Invitational women's volleyball tournament at the Smith Center.

The Aggies improve to 2-4 for the season. The Tigers slip to 1-2 overall.

Ohiri added 4-for-7 hitting to go with her match-best blocks total. Squyres committed just three attacking errors to finish at .355 for the match, while her 14 digs also extended her streak of dig-kill double-doubles to six. Junior outside hitter Allie Wegener chipped in 10 kills and served up four aces. Freshman libero Malia Bolko also had three aces while junior setter Sophia Mar provided two more for a team total of nine. Mar and freshman Maddie Merlino combined for 36 assists at setter.

Besides Ohiri's net play, freshman Lauren Jackson tallied a solo stuff plus four assists, opposite Nicola Moore added four block assists and Squyres posted a 1-3-4 blocking chart. Overall, the Aggies' 14 team blocks marks their highest for a three-set match since stuffing 16 against UC Riverside last season.

No Princeton player managed more than six kills while the Tigers hit just .032 collectively. They struggled with 22 attacking errors, 14 of which coming from the UC Davis net play.

The Aggies never trailed in the opening set, with Wegener's 4-for-7 attack leading a team average of .417. Meanwhile, Ohiri had six block assists in that first set, stifling Princeton to 10 total errors and minus-.061 hitting. The Tigers rallied in the second, overcoming a 10-3 Aggie start and a late 17-12 deficit by scoring six straight in claiming an 18-17 lead. A block by Brooke Hersberger and Brittany Ptak gave Princeton the go-ahead point. However, UC Davis scored seven of the next nine, thanks to two kills and a block from Squyres.

The senior and returning All-Big West performer provided five kills and three blocks in the finale, including two of each that broke a 6-6 tie into a 16-12 edge. Wegener served up back-to-back aces to extend the lead to 18-12, and UC Davis maintained at least a five-point cushion the rest of the way.

The Aggies' .284 hitting average also represents a season high, surpassing the .234 against Radford in Friday's GW Invite opener.

Squyres finished the tournament with 46 kills (4.18 per set) and 44 digs (4.00) in three matches. Wegener recorded 12 aces and had 29 kills in her 11 sets. Ohiri's 16 total blocks (1.45) led three Aggies in double figures for the weekend, along with junior Kendall Walbrecht (11, 1.00 average) and sophomore Aima Eichie (10, 1.25 average). Bolko amassed 47 digs (4.27) with only two receiving errors in 83 passes (.976).

UC Davis continues a two-week road trip at Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday before competing at Nebraska's Ameritas Players Challenge the following weekend.
