WASHINGTON - Senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres totaled 32 kills in eight total sets while junior Allie Wegener served up six aces in the nightcap against the host Colonials, as UC Davis split its Friday matches in the George Washington Invitational women's volleyball tournament at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Aggies lost 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-13 to host GW in the evening match, hours after picking up their first 2015 win with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of Radford in afternoon action. UC Davis moves to 1-4 for the year.
Squyres had 15 kills in the win over the Highlanders then followed with 17 against GW. Wegener and freshman Nicola Moore added 12 kills apiece in the marathon with the Colonials. Freshman libero Malia Bolko had 41 total digs for the day: 21 against RU, 20 against GW. Sophomore middle blocker Aima Eichie also enjoyed a solid overall day with 3-0-8 attacking and four blocks in the early match, followed by .312 hitting (9-4-16) with six block assists in the evening contest. Her fellow middle, redshirt freshman Kelechi Ohiri, combined for an errorless 9-for-14 attacking and eight blocks at the net.
GEORGE WASHINGTON 3, UC DAVIS 2
GW took a 13-7 lead on the Aggies in the first set before serving and hitting woes allowed UC Davis to battle back to a 13-13 tie. The Aggies briefly held a 17-16 lead on a Wegener kill, then took a 21-20 edge on a Squyres score, but kills by Kelsey Clark and 2014 All-American Chidima Osuchukwu put the Colonials back on top by a 23-21 margin. The Aggies tallied three straight to claim a 24-23 set point, only to have Osuchukwu to rally GW to its own 3-0 run in stealing back the frame.
Wegener served up a pair of aces to boost UC Davis to a 10-7 lead in the second. The Aggies stayed in front for the remainder although an Aaliya Davidson kill did bring GW to within a 17-16 deficit. A third ace by Wegener and another by freshman Emily Allen sparked a 5-1 Aggie run that extended the margin to 22-17. Wegener's eighth kill of the match closed out the victory to even the set score to 1-1 heading to the break.
Net troubles sunk UC Davis into an early 9-4 hole in the third. The Aggies largely kept pace for the remainder of the set but never equalized, as Osuchukwu continued to pound away. She had five kills in that third stanza while Clark and Aaliya Davidson each added three more in bringing the match lead back to GW.
As in the first and third, UC Davis slipped behind early in the fourth, with Clark scoring three kills in an 8-3 Colonial start. The Aggies chipped away, with kills by Wegener and Ohiri closing the gap to just 14-13 midway through the set. The first GW attacking error then tied the frame at 14-14. Ohiri later teamed with Squyres for a block to give UC Davis a 16-15 lead, but a pair of attack errors allowed GW three straight points and an 18-16 lead.
The Aggies did not regain the advantage until two rare Osuchukwu errors -- only her second and third of the match on 41 swings to that point -- sent UC Davis to a 23-22 advantage and induced a GW timeout. Squyres put down her 14th kill for the 24th point, then junior Kendall Walbrecht put away the winner to close the set and force a fifth frame. The Colonials dropped from .389 attacking to just .103 in the fourth-set loss, while the Aggies maintained a solid .250 average in the victory.
Moore tallied three kills and a block assist as the two teams battled to four ties until 9-9. Then Osuchukwu hit back-to-back kills to put GW up, 12-10, for its first lead of the fifth. UC Davis equalized for a sixth time at 12-12, only to have the Colonials take the next two to set up double match point. Maggie Skjelbred make it three straight to complete the win for GW.
UC DAVIS 3, RADFORD 0
Squyres went on an offensive tear late in the first set, with five kills releasing UC Davis from a 15-15 tie to a 22-17 edge. Eichie then put down a free ball to extend the lead to 23-17. Returning All-Big South performers Haley Kleespies and Maddie Palmer sparked a comeback that brought the Highlanders back to within 23-20, but an Allie Wegener kill and a Walbrecht solo stuff closed out the opener in the Aggies' favor. Squyres finished at 7-1-11 while freshman Nicola Moore was an errorless 3-for-6, helping UC Davis hit .310 for the frame.
The Aggies never trailed in the second, with Walbrecht providing the initial spark of a kill and block assist in a 6-1 start. Palmer again helped close the gap with both her attack and blocking, while some brief miscues allowed the Highlanders to pull within a 10-9 deficit. However, UC Davis held RU to minus-.079 hitting for the frame. Squyres had four kills and seven digs while Allie Wegener posted four kills on 13 swings to complete the six-point win.
UC Davis continued to roll after the break. Setter Sophia Mar served up a pair of aces in a 6-0 stretch that propelled the Aggies from an initial 4-3 deficit to a 9-4 lead in the third set. That lead stretched to seven on four occasions, as UC Davis finished the 3-0 match win. Bolko provided eight digs in the final frame.
UC Davis wraps up the tournament with a Sunday match against Princeton. First serve is 10 a.m. Pacific.
