DAVIS, Calif. -- Brian Charles' first goal of the season, coming with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime, snapped a 1-1 deadlock and lifted visiting CSU Bakersfield to a 2-1 victory over host UC Davis on Friday evening at the Aggie Soccer Field.
The Aggies dropped to 0-3 overall on the season despite holding a 24-8 advantage in the shot column and a 9-4 lead in shots on goal for the match. The Roadrunners evened their record at 1-1 overall, getting eight saves from goalkeeper Nicholas Clever in the win.
Charles' goal came in the 108th minute, taking a pass at the top of the box, turning, and firing to the lower left side of the net to end the match on his only shot of the day.
It was an auspicious start to the match for the Roadrunners, who got on the board midway through the first half thanks to an own goal off a corner by Adam Arana that was misdirected into the goal by a defender to make it 1-0.
That goal stood for the rest of the period and into the second half before the Aggies found the equalizer at the 63-minute mark. Redshirt freshman Matt Baringer dribbled to the the top of the box on the left side and unleashed a shot from just inside the 18. The attempt was partially blocked by a scrum in the middle, but popped up and found its way in at the right post to tie the match at one apiece.
UC Davis held a 12-3 shot advantage in the first half, including an attempt by senior Matt Wiesenfarth who rattled the crossbar on a header off a free kick in the 13th minute. Redshirt freshman Roy Boateng had another golden chance on a nifty sequence in the 20th minute, almost putting home another header off a long throw in by freshman Kristian Heptner that was headed to the back post by Lucas Mohageg.
Wiesenfarth and Heptner tested Clever out of the break, including a shot by the freshman that was saved at the left post after he had turned his defender at the top of the box. The Aggies finished the second half with the final five shots of the period, but could not find the back of the net, forcing overtime.
Boateng and Ryan Gross each had attempts in the first extra period, and Wiesenfarth had a header turned away by Clever in the second minute of the second overtime before Charles ended the match six minutes later.
Senior goalkeeper Kris Schultz finished with a pair of saves for UC Davis, which had 10 players record shots -- six of those with shots on goal.
The Aggies look to bounce back on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m., welcoming Wisconsin to the Aggie Soccer Field in a non-conference clash.
