DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Evan Barrett's first career goal in the 52nd minute broke a 1-1 tie and helped lift UC Davis to its third straight victory, a 3-1 triumph over visiting San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Field.

The win pushed the Aggies to 4-5 overall on the season heading into next week's Big West Conference openers at UC Riverside and defending conference tournament champion Cal State Fullerton. The loss was the sixth straight for the Dons, who fell to 2-8 overall on the year.

"I thought we played outstanding," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer. "We had 25 shots, scored three goals -- probably could have had four or five -- and, I know USF is a good program and things aren't going their way, but I thought we deserved the win. We defended well, created numerous scoring opportunities, and our younger players are starting to hit their stride."

Barrett's game-winner came thanks to a perfectly timed run down the right side of the box. Teammate Matt Baringer dribbled down the left side and threaded a ball across the goal mouth that caught Barrett's foot in stride, and the sophomore one-timed a shot straight in to put the Aggies in front for good.

The assist was the first of his career for Baringer to set-up Barrett, who notched his first career point with an assist in UC Davis' 6-0 win over Pacific on Sept. 20, and get him into the scoring column.

For the third time this season, senior Lucas Mohageg got the Aggies on the board first, striking off a set piece in the 27th minute. A corner by Noah Wilson sailed to the back post to the head of Mohageg, who drove a header into the ground with some english on it. Goalkeeper Andre Glasnovic was there to make the initial stop in tight, but the ball spun off his fingertips and tucked inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.

The score was the fifth of the year for Mohageg -- setting a new career high -- while Wilson tallied his second assist of the year. Mohageg now has a goal in four consecutive matches dating back to the Aggies' game against San Jose State on Sept. 16, and has a point in five of the team's last six contests dating back to a three-point day against Wisconsin on Sept. 6.

San Francisco answered quickly just four minutes later as Manny Padilla played a long ball that Bryce Kaminsky was able to run on two. With two defenders converging on him, Kaminsky powered his way through and found himself 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Kris Schultz, sending a low shot to the left side for his first of the year and tie the match at one apiece.

Following Barrett's goal, the Aggies added on an insurance strike with just 48 seconds remaining in the match as Ryan Gross sent Matt Wiesenfarth up the middle of the field and the senior popped a shot up and over the charging Glasnovic for his second of the season.

Wiesenfarth now has a point in four of his last five contests -- including three straight from Sept. 11-20 -- while Gross has notched a point in three straight matches thanks to goals against Pacific and Saint Mary's along with Sunday's assist.

UC Davis outshot San Francisco, 25-9, for the match, including a 17-1 advantage in the second half. Fourteen of the 20 Aggies who entered the match finished with shots, led by five from Wiesenfarth. Sean Bowman finished with four of the Dons' nine shots on the day, while Glasnovic made seven saves in net.

Big West play opens against the Highlanders on Thursday (Oct. 1) at 7 p.m., before the Aggies and Titans clash two days later on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. in Fullerton.

"These three wins are going to give us a lot of momentum, a lot of confidence," Shaffer said. "If you throw out our first weekend, we've played really well. We're getting better and better and, heading into conference play, I like the direction we're headed, we've settled in to a great rotation of players… this is where we want to start peaking as a team."
