Sept. 26, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis battled Stanford to early deficits of just 3-2 and 6-3 before the No. 2-ranked Cardinal began pulling away en route to an 18-6 win during Saturday's action of the Aggie Roundup men's water polo tournament Saturday afternoon. The 10th-ranked Aggies previously posted an 18-8 exhibition win against Diablo Valley College.
UC Davis moves to 7-5 for the season.
Six different Aggie players scored one goal each while sophomore goalkeeper Spencer Creed posted 14 saves in the nightcap loss to Stanford. Senior center Wes Lincoln was the first on the board for UC Davis, tying the contest at 1-1 with his goal from set early in the opening period. Creed tallied five stops in that first quarter, including two against Cardinal power plays and another on a counterattack soon after Lincoln's tally.
Freshman Ido Goldschmidt scored his lone goal on a 6-on-5 chance early in the second to bring the Aggies to within a 3-2 deficit at the 5:01 mark in the second. Senior utility Sean Grab buried an outside shot with a minute left before the halftime break to bring the Aggies to within 6-3. However, Stanford took a 7-3 halftime edge on the third of six total Bret Bonanni scores.
Sophomore Spencer Galli assisted Riley Venne and Cory Laidig on goals in the third quarter, while Lyle Kipp converted a 6-on-5 opportunity for the Aggies in the fourth to round out the scoring. The Cardinal piled up five goals in the third to pull to a 12-5 lead entering the fourth, then continued to run up six more in the finale.
The Stanford game was the only official contest of the day for the Aggies. However, Goldschmidt, Galli, redshirt freshman Brock Gordon and junior center Jacob Ley each posted hat tricks in an 18-8 win over DVC in the team's morning action. Ley and redshirt freshman Marcus Anderson each finished power-play goals to crack a 2-2 tie after the first quarter. UC Davis broke loose for six goals in the second to forge an 8-5 lead, then shut out the Vikings in the third to extend its lead to 11-5.
The score and stats from the Aggies' morning contest do not count toward the official season totals, as Diablo Valley College is a two-year institution.
The Aggie Roundup tournament began on Friday with a single neutral-site contest between Pacific and Cal Baptist. UC Davis continues action in its own home tournament on Sunday with games against Pacific (10:40 a.m.) and Santa Clara (6:40 p.m.).
