Volleyball falls in three to No. 25 Long Beach State

Sept. 25, 2015

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres posted match highs of 12 kills and 34 swings, but UC Davis committed 20 attacking errors in falling to 25th-ranked Long Beach State in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22, 25-12, in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at the Pyramid Friday night.

The Aggies slip to 5-10 overall and open league play at 0-1. The 49ers improve to 11-3 for the year and 1-0 in Big West matches.

Friday's televised showdown featured two of the league's top three kills leaders in Squyres and LBSU junior Nele Barber, each of whom finished with 12 kills. No other UC Davis player had more than three kills. Senior middle blocker Jillian Johnson had exactly that many, providing an ace and two block assists to go with her .400 average.

Squyres was the Aggies' lone bright spot in a first set otherwise dominated by Long Beach State. She posted six kills with just two errors, but Barber's 5-for-9 attacking led to a .500 average. The 49ers jumped out to a 13-4 start, and kept their guests at bay en route to the 14-point win in the opener.

Tough serving propelled UC Davis to a strong start in the second. Junior Allie Wegener, Johnson and junior setter Sophia Mar combined for four aces in a 10-2 start. LBSU slowly chipped away at the margin, with Hayley Benson's tool and Mykah Wilson's ace closing the gap to 11-9. Squyres continued to pile up kills to keep UC Davis ahead until Barber scored three kills and a block in a 7-0 run that flipped the 49ers back to a 22-17 lead.

Squyres delivered an ace and her 11th kill to bring the Aggies back to a 22-20 deficit, shortly before Barber teamed with Benson for a left-side block to create a 24-20 set point. Three points later, it was again Barber, putting away the 25th point on a four set for her 23rd swing of the night. Despite five aces at the service line, UC Davis finished the second set with 10 errors and a minus-.053 average, heading to the break with a two-set match deficit.

As they did in the first, the 49ers came out strong in the third. Wilson had two kills in a 9-2 start for the Beach. Freshman outside hitter Carly Beddingfield hit four straight kills to extend the lead to 18-7 as LBSU continued to pull away in completing the sweep. An Aggie serve sailed long to set up match point, then Barber and Benson came up with their team's ninth overall block for the winner.

UC Davis continues its first Big West Conference weekend with a match at CSUN on Saturday. First serve is 7 p.m.
