Sept. 24, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Sean Grab and junior Lyle Kipp each netted four goals while sophomore goalie Spencer Creed notched 11 saves, helping 10th-ranked UC Davis capture a 17-10 win over Cal Baptist in a Western Water Polo Association men's matchup at Schaal Aquatics Center Thursday night.
The Aggies improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in WWPA play. The Lancers, among the teams receiving votes in the national coaches' poll, slip to 2-5 for the year and 0-1 in conference.
The two utilities helped UC Davis compile its largest offensive total in a conference game since an 18-9 victory against La Verne in 2011, back when the WWPA included members of the Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Sophomore Cory Laidig, senior Austin Beckwith and redshirt freshman Riley Venne each chipped in two while Tennyson May, Ido Goldschmidt and Nick Coufal had one goal apiece.
Senior David Ring led CBU with three goals while Tucker Angelo added two.
The Aggies exploded to six goals in the first quarter while Creed piled up six saves. Beckwith got UC Davis stated with his 6-on-5 conversion in the opening minute, although Ring immediately answered with his goal out of two meters to even the tally at 1-1 in just the first 40 seconds of answered. Grab then scored the next two - first on an assist from Goldschmidt, then on a five-meter penalty - to launch a run of five unanswered for the Aggies. Kipp scored back-to-back at 3:43 and 2:45 during that run, while sophomore Spencer Galli assisted Venne in transition to extend the lead to 6-1.
Angelo ended CBU's scoring drought with his 6-on-5 conversion with 38 seconds left in the quarter. That began an extended defensive showdown that continued for six minutes into the second quarter. Creed and junior center Jacob Ley posted key saves to protect the Aggie cage but UC Davis struggled to get a shot off on its attacking end. The long scoreless spell ended when Ring finished a power play with two minutes left in the half, cutting the Aggie lead to 6-3.
Another Creed steal at two meters led to a Grab counterattack goal with 1:07 left, then Kipp assisted May with 24 ticks remaining, sending UC Davis to the halftime break with an 8-3 lead.
The Lancers connected on a five-meter penalty to start the third, only to have UC Davis score five of the next six. Kipp and Goldschmidt both buried outside shots. Laidig scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity midway through the frame, then converted an assist from Grab on a counterattack just 23 seconds later. Beckwith delivered his second goal of the game at 0:49 to make it 13-5 in UC Davis's favor.
CBU managed four goals in the finale but foul trouble helped the Aggies stay comfortably ahead for the remainder: Coufal, Venne and Kipp each scored on power plays in the fourth.
Thursday's contest begins a long home weekend for UC Davis, which hosts the Aggie Roundup from Friday through Sunday. Friday's action consists of a neutral-site matchup between CBU and No. 5 Pacific. The Aggies take on Diablo Valley College and No. 2 Stanford on Saturday, then square off with Pacific and Concordia on Sunday.
