DAVIS, Calif. -- Six different UC Davis players found the back of the net and 11 different players recorded points on the day as the host Aggies rolled to a 6-0 victory over Pacific on a record-setting Sunday at the Aggie Soccer Field.
Senior goalkeeper Kris Schultz finished with four saves in recording the team's first shutout of the year, as UC Davis improved to 2-5 overall and won its second straight contest at home. The Tigers, who had suffered one-goal defeats in four of their five losses this season, fell to 1-6 overall.
"There's a whole different psyche that goes into athletics that sometimes people don't realize," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer said. "You can have a really good team and the results just don't go your way and it's tough to tell the guys that they're doing everything right and you're just waiting for things to turn a little bit. Today, it finally turned for us. Taking nothing away from Pacific, but everything went our way today."
The six goals were a season high and tied the program's Division I record for most goals in a game dating back to a 6-0 shutout victory over IPFW on Sept. 14, 2007 -- the school's debut season at the Division I level. The four goals in the second half, also matched a Division I record, dating back to a four-goal first half in a 4-2 win over Oakland on Sept. 15, 2007, and set a Division I mark for the most points by the team in a match (17), breaking the previous mark of 15 set against IPFW.
In addition, the five assists on Sunday are the second-most in the program's Division I history, falling one shy of the record of six set against Cal Poly on Oct. 30, 2010.
"Today, our overall defensive pressure from our forwards is what turned it for us," Shaffer said. "We've been trying to get our front guys to defend a little bit harder, to make it easier on our midfielders and our back four. It wasn't happening at the start of the game, but after we got that first goal, it kind of opened up for us, and everyone that came in fed off that, started to play harder, work a little bit more."
UC Davis held a 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 lead in shots on goal, but the Aggies were held off the scoreboard until a late first-half flurry gave them a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Freshman Justin Wright had a hand in both scores, the first coming when he was taken down in the box trying to drive toward the goal with just over five minutes remaining in the period. That set up Lucas Mohageg at the penalty spot, and the senior calmly buried the shot to the right side for his third score of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Wright then got into the scoring column with his first career goal just three minutes later, parlaying a misplay by the Pacific goalkeeper into a two-goal lead. The freshman stole the ball when it bounced away from the keeper, settled near the end line, and put it home to the left post from a sharp angle right before the end of the half.
The floodgates opened with two more goals just five minutes apart in the second half as sophomore Lizandro Torres netted his first of the season off a nifty sequence by Evan Barrett and Miguel Acevedo. Barrett won the ball near the top of the box and chipped it over to Acevedo on the left side, who threaded a pass across the goalmouth to a waiting Torres, who volleyed it home for the 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
Freshman Roy Boateng followed with his first career goal in the 67th minute thanks to a fortuitous bounce on a corner by Hoshang Hatifie. Hatifie's ball curled in toward the back post, clipping the bottom and bouncing right back out to Boateng, who one-timed a shot to the right side for the 4-0 advantage.
Senior Ryan Gross added his second of the year on a rocket from 30 yards out after a pass by Kyle Higgins in the 73rd minute, and junior Evan Alvarez netted his first career goal after Matt Wiesenfarth won a 50-50 ball at the top of the box and Alvarez one-timed a shot into the left side to cap the scoring.
For the match, 14 different Aggies finished with shots, led by three from freshman Matt Baringer, while Brian Im had three of the Tigers' nine attempts.
"To get that second win, to get us going, hopefully will keep the momentum going next week against Saint Mary's," Shaffer said. "I think our star of the day was our depth. I don't think we have one player that has just stood out. Collectively, staying together as a team is what we're all about."
UC Davis closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule next week, traveling to Moraga, Calif., to take on Saint Mary's on Thursday (Sept. 24) at 4 p.m., before hosting San Francisco on Sunday (Sept. 27) at 1 p.m.
