SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Late-game heroics by senior Lucas Mohageg brought the UC Davis men's soccer team level with just under five minutes remaining in regulation on Wednesday evening, but host San Jose State was able to bounce back, striking for the game-winner four minutes into the second overtime en route to a 2-1 victory over the Aggies at the Spartan Soccer Field.
The goal was Mohageg's team-leading second of the season, but it wasn't enough for UC Davis, which fell to 1-5 overall on the season. It was the fourth consecutive match decided by a single goal for the Aggies -- three of those decided by a 2-1 result -- and the second double-overtime defeat in that same span.
The Spartans, who had been shut out in three of their four contests entering the day, improved to 2-3 overall on the year in the first meeting between the two programs since 2010.
Outshot by a 7-4 margin and a 9-1 deficit in corners in the first half, UC Davis was put in a hole early when Kyler McLaughlin put home a centering pass from Jonathan Colunga for his first of the year in the 14th minute and a 1-0 lead, ending a scoreless streak of just over 231 minutes.
Spartans' goalkeeper Emmanuel Espinoza was equal to the task, finishing with nine saves and withstanding a barrage of nine second-half shots by the Aggies' offense in the second half, stopping four shots and making it look as if McLaughlin's goal would stand as the only score of the match.
Mohageg had other plans, however, thanks to some help from teammate Matt Wiesenfarth. The Sacramento native launched a throw-in from the right side line and found the head of Mohageg, who headed it home to tie the score in the 86th minute. For Wiesenfarth, the assist moved him into a tie with Paul Marcoux for third on the school's Division I career points list, just three back of Matt Sheldon for second place, while the assist was the sixth of his career -- good for ninth on the school's Division I chart.
Meanwhile, for Mohageg, it was the senior's sixth career goal -- all coming in the last two seasons -- putting him just two shy of the top 10 on the school's career Division I list in that category.
Each team got off a pair of shots in the first overtime -- both of which were on frame for UC Davis and turned away by Espinoza -- but neither team could dent the back of the net. That set the stage for leading scorer Rory Knibbs, who took a pass from Eric Mendez and tucked a right-footed shot inside the near post for the game-winner in the 104th minute to end the match.
Of the Aggies' 15 shots, 10 were put on frame, led by four shots overall (three on frame) by Mohageg and three more shots (two on goal) by Matt Baringer. Senior Kris Schultz and junior Armando Quezada split time in net, with the former making the start and playing the first half, each finishing with a pair of saves.
Knibbs finished with a match-high six shots, three of those on frame, while netting his second game-winning goal of the season. San Jose State also finished with a 16-7 advantage in corner kicks for the match.
UC Davis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 20) for its first home match in two weeks, welcoming Pacific to the Aggie Soccer Field for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
