Hornets halt Aggies in Causeway Classic sweep

Sept. 15, 2015

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis suffered 24 attacking errors and eight service errors in falling to Sacramento State by a 26-24, 25-20, 25-15 sweep in non-conference women's volleyball action at Upper Hickey Gym Tuesday night.

The Aggies fall to 4-7 for the year. The Hornets continue their hot start, moving to 11-1 overall.

Senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres was the one UC Davis player with double-digit offense, amassing 10 kills in 33 swings. Junior Allie Wegener added another nine kills while the pair each recorded 12 digs to lead the floor defense. However, Sacramento State received combined .397 hitting from left-siders Sloan Lovett and Lauren Kissell for the match. Kissell posted 16 kills with only two errors while Lovett finished with a 14-3-31 chart.

The Aggies got off to a 7-3 start on kills from Wegener and junior Kendall Walbrecht. They maintained a lead until back-to-back aces by Morgan Stanley put the Hornets into a 16-15 lead. UC Davis managed to tie the contest on four more occasions, including a 24-24 knot on a rare solo block by freshman setter Maddie Merlino. However, Lovett put away two straight to close out the set.

Sacramento State continued to roll into the second, with Kissell scoring three kills in an 8-3 Hornet start. Lovett had a block and a kill amidst a 4-0 run that set the lead to 16-10 before UC Davis twice mounted a comeback to a three-point margin. Wegener and Squyres put away shots to close the gap to 23-20 before Sacramento State halted the charge. The Hornets had 27 digs and eight blocks in that second set alone, holding the Aggies to a .088 average.

UC Davis continued to struggle offensively in the final set, committing 11 attack errors with just six kills for a minus-.172 rate. Madeline Cannon posted a solo block to highlight a run of six unanswered, putting Sac State up by a 14-6 margin. Squyres and Wegener each had kills to help shrink the deficit to 18-14 but three straight Kissell kills extended the Hornet lead back to 22-15. Libero Lexi Sklabeck served up an ace for Sac State's 23rd, an errant Aggie bump pass was the 24th, then sophomore Shannon Boyle scored the match-winner with her tool.

UC Davis hit just .067 for the entire match, getting outkilled (40-32), outdug (54-41) and outblocked (12-6) by its Causeway Classic rival.

The Aggies return to action on Friday at the Fresno State Classic Served By Deli Delicious. The Aggies face Southern Utah and Portland on Friday, then the host Bulldogs on Saturday.
