Sept. 12, 2015 SAN JOSE - Freshman utility Sasa Antunovic scored three goals while junior two-meters Tennyson May added two more, helping No. 12 UC Davis explode in the second half for a 10-3 win against No. 14 San Jose State in collegiate men's water polo action at The Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 3-2 for the year. The Spartans even their season record to 1-1.
Antunovic netted two-thirds of his hat trick as part of a five-goal third quarter that helped UC Davis break loose from a close 3-2 halftime edge. Cory Laidig, Lyle Kipp, Wes Lincoln and Ido Goldschmidt also contributed a goal each, as did senior Evan MacCarthy, who competed in his first game since 2013 after sitting out last year due to injury.
Reigning KAP7 Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week Spencer Creed tallied 11 saves with just the three goals against.
SJSU took the initial lead as sophomore defender Igor Miljan scored his lone goal on a five-meter penalty shot just 50 seconds into the contest. Antunovic equalized on the other end during the next possession, then Laidig put the Aggies up with his goal at 0:59 in the first. However, Justin Contreras converted a 6-on-5 chance after the ensuing restart to tie the contest at 2-2.
Kipp landed the only second-quarter goal by either team to provide UC Davis with a one-goal edge, but the Aggies unleashed a string of seven unanswered after the break, including three on power plays.
UC Davis returns to action on Sunday with its home opener against No. 3 California. Game time is noon at Schaal Aquatics Center.
