BERKELEY, Calif. -- UC Davis senior
Matt Wiesenfarth found the back of the net for the first time this season to make it a one-goal game late and the Aggies' had a last-second attempt go just wide at the final whistle as host California escaped with a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon at Goldman Field in Berkeley, California.
UC Davis fell to 1-4 with the loss in the first meeting between the two programs since the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Bears improved to 3-1 on the year, scoring eight minutes apart late in the match to secure the win.
Following a scoreless first half that saw both teams finish with four shots, California was the first on the board in the 73rd minute on Matt Chasman's first goal of the year, finishing a cross by teammate Ugo Rebecchini at the back post for the 1-0 lead. Shinya Kadono made it 2-0 in the 81st minute with his first of the year, converting passes from Jose Carrera-Garcia and Paul Salcedo.
That set the stage for Wiesenfarth's first goal of the season in the 88th minute, finishing a ball that was played in and deflected by a Golden Bears defender to pull a goal back and bring the Aggies to within one.
For Wiesenfarth, it was his first goal since netting the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State on Nov. 9, 2013. The senior played only six matches last season before suffering a season-ending injury against Air Force on Sept. 19.
The Aggies kept up the pressure, gaining a corner in the final 10 seconds, but Lucas Mohageg's shot went wide off the ball played by teammate Hoshang Hatifie as time expired.
California finished with a narrow 9-8 advantage in shots, with Wiesenfarth accounting for three of UC Davis' attempts on the day. The Golden Bears, who put five of their nine on frame for the contest, were led by two apiece from Christian Thierjung and Chasman.
The Aggies took three of the first four shots in the contest, with Wiesenfarth having one blocked and a second go wide, while Ryan Gross had an attempt also go just off the mark. Goalkeeper Kris Schultz came up with a stop on the first scoring chance of the day, denying Nick Lima in the 21st minute, and successfully defending three corners in a four-minute span midway through the period.
Schultz also came up with another stop on Chasman in the 29th minute to force another corner kick, which came up empty for California, as both teams headed into the break scoreless.
UC Davis doesn't return to the field until Sept. 16 when the Aggies return to the Bay Area to battle San Jose State in a 5 p.m. kick-off from Spartan Soccer Field.
