LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior outside hitter Allie Wegener followed Wednesday's career-high night at Omaha with 13 kills and .323 hitting on Friday, but UC Davis ultimately fell in three sets, 25-17, 25-11, 25-17, to No. 5-ranked Nebraska to open the Ameritas Players Challenge women's volleyball tournament.
The Aggies slip to 3-4 for the season. The tourney host Cornhuskers improve to 5-1.
Wegener, who had 28 kills in her previous match, led all UC Davis hitters with 13 kills and just three errors on 31 swings. Senior Kaylin Squyres added 12 kills and a .296 average. However, the physically imposing Nebraska offense exploded for a season-best .438 attack rate. Freshman Mikaela Foecke supplied 12 kills on just 20 attempts to lead the Huskers offensively while junior middle blocker Amber Rolfzen posted a match-high seven blocks on net defense.
The two teams wrestled closely early in the opening set before three Aggie errors and three straight kills by Mikaela Foecke helped Nebraska break loose from a 7-7 tie to an 18-10 lead. Wegener posted five kills down the stretch to bring UC Davis to within a five-point deficit, but the Huskers scored four of the final five on unforced miscues in taking the initial match lead. The Aggies committed just three attacking errors in the opener, finishing with a solid .303 average. Squyres matched Wegener's total of five kills in the first.
Nebraska went the entire second set with little challenge. Twin sisters Amber and Kadie Rolfzen scored consecutive blocks in a 7-2 start, then setter Kelly Hunter's second-ball kill extended the margin to 14-4. Wegener remained a bright spot for the Aggies with three kills and a service ace later in the frame, but UC Davis could not approach to within fewer than seven points. Nebraska cruised to a 25-11 victory and a 2-0 match lead heading into the break.
The Aggies battled early in the third set, even taking an 11-9 lead on a Squyres kill midway through. However, the Cornhuskers answered with a 7-1 run, with Kadie Rolfzen scoring two kills during a long Annika Albrecht serving run. Nebraska maintained at least a six-point edge the rest of the way in completing the sweep.
UC Davis continues action at the Ameritas Players Challenge against Georgia Tech and South Florida on Saturday. Match times are 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pacific.
