SAN JOSE, Calif. - Andi Damian and Rachel Smith scored in the fifth and seventh minute respectively in Friday's exhibition match Spartan Soccer Field to help UC Davis defeat San José State, 2-0.

Including its 1-0 regular-season victory at Aggie Soccer Field last year, women's soccer downed SJSU for the second time in as many years.

Unlike last year's matchup when the lone goal was scored with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Andi Damian beat San José State goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis 4:40 into the match.

Damian's shot was the second taken by UC Davis at that point of the contest.

One minute and 48 seconds later, on the very next shot taken by the Aggies, Smith doubled her team's lead when she turned a cross to the middle of the field from Damian into a one-time shot that easily beat the Spartans' `keeper.

Smith led a contingent of Aggies with five shots, followed by Celina Minissian who led all reserves with four shots on goal.

Now armed with a sizable lead, UC Davis limited SJSU to only six shots throughout the remaining 83 minutes, and only allowed one shot on goal. By comparison, the Aggies tested both SJSU goalkeepers from start to finish since seven of their 17 shots were on goal.

Freshman transfer Alexis Smith started in goal for UC Davis and was responsible for her team's lone save.

Since players' eligibility was unaffected by Friday's contest, head coach Twila Kaufman used Friday's meeting as an opportunity to help her team prepare for next week's season opener against Santa Clara. In addition to her starting 11, another 12 players earned quality minutes against the Spartans.

UC Davis' coaching staff will use this result, and next week's practices to help everyone prepare for the team's Aug. 21 season opener against the Broncos. Action from Aggie Soccer Field will begin at 5 p.m.
