DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis doubles tandem of Assistant Coach Michael Meyer and senior-to-be Brett Bacharach is possibly four wins away from a berth in the 2015 U.S. Open following a victory in a sectional qualifier last weekend in Salinas, Calif.
"We will likely be one of the biggest underdogs out there, but to have the opportunity to play for a berth into the US Open Grand Slam will be an amazing experience and a dream I've had since a young kid," Meyer said. "We look forward to competing as best we can in Connecticut and, hopefully, New York City."
The event was one of 14 nationwide, with the winners advancing to the national tournament on Aug. 25-28 in conjunction with the Connecticut Open in New Haven, Conn. The team that emerges from the national playoff earns a wild card berth into the main draw of the U.S. Open held from Aug. 31-Sept. 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Following a first-round bye, Meyer and Bacharach defeated Luis Dos Reis and partner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, before upending the No. 1 doubles team from Pacific of Miguel Diaz and Sem Verbeek, 6-3, 7-5. The Aggie duo then rallied from a set down, and saved five match points, to post a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10), win over Leon Bax and Vittorio Fratta.
"I'm excited to get the opportunity to compete in this event, and feel lucky to have an assistant coach that has the level and desire to play as well," Bacharach said.
Other sectional winners include Tennessee's Mikelis Libetis and Hunter Reese, who finished the year ranked No. 3 in the NCAA according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's final poll, Travis Parrott, the 2009 U.S. Open mixed doubles champion who won the Intermountain qualifier in Las Vegas, and pro players Julio Peralta and Matt Seeberger, who are ranked No. 193 and No. 204 in the world, respectively.
