HONOLULU - UC Davis battled back in the top of the seventh inning during Saturday's season finale at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium when Phalen Cochran scored with two outs, and the Aggies had runners on the corners before Hawai'i recorded the final out of the game to collect a 7-1 victory.
With that result, UC Davis ends its season tied for sixth place in the conference with an 18-31 overall and 6-15 Big West record. Hawai'i finished its season with records of 32-22 and 13-8.
Saturday's season finale also marked the final appearance in a UC Davis uniform for three graduating student-athletes: centerfielder Krista Bava, left fielder Jasmine Lee and first baseman Amy Nunez.
With an energetic crowd ready to cheer for anything positive from the home team, UC Davis' defense silenced the crown instantly, in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to its situational awareness.
After Hawai'i's leadoff hitter reached base on a walk, Keiki Carlos, the very next batter, successfully dropped a sacrifice bunt. That was the first out of the inning, but second baseman Alexandra Sotomayor helped her team collect its second within a matter of moments once Kayla Wartner rounded second base.
Noticing that Wartner was a few steps off the bag towards third, Sotomayor snapped a throw to Christa Castello who covered second. Knowing that she was in no-(wo)man's land between the bags,Wartnerhad no choice but to continue running. From there, Castello planted and threw a perfect strike to KellyZboralske, who then tagged Wartner to complete the double play.
Within seconds, a fired-up crowd instantly became silent, and the Aggies ended the inning on the very next Rainbow Wahine batter.
In the following frame, great hustle plays from Nunez, who recorded the first out with a perfect throw to second on a sacrifice bunt attempt, and Brianna Warner, who posted out number two on a diving play in shallow left field, helped UC Davis keep the Rainbow Wahine at bay until a unfortunate hop turned into an Aggie error.
UH scored its first run on that unfortunate bounce; after a six-pitch walk shortly thereafter to load the bases, Hawai'i tacked on another four runs with a two-out grand slam.
Two scoreless innings took place before UH extended its lead in the fifth on a solo home run, followed by a single from Leisha Liilii, a wild pitch that allowed her to advance to scoring position and a double that brought her home.
Undaunted, UC Davis returned to the plate for its final set of at-bats and started its scoring rally with a leadoff single to center from Cochran who earned her first collegiate start as the team's catcher.
Entering the game to pinch run for Cochran, Kaila Olson advanced to second when Alexandra Sotomayor hit a ground out to Hawai'i's third baseman.
Entering the batter's box with two outs, Castello's speed forced UH's second baseman to rush her throw, and commit an error that kept the Aggies' rally alive and allowed Olson to score.
With runners on the corners, UC Davis' comeback effort came to an end the very next batter when Hawai'i caught a hard-hit line drive to end the game.
