DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis head men's tennis coach Eric Steidlmayer was named the Big West Conference Coach of the Year, while sophomores Alec Adamson and James Wade were first team All-Big West singles selections as the league office announced its postseason honor roll on Tuesday afternoon.
Wrapping up his third season at the helm, Steidlmayer becomes the program's first Big West Coach of the Year representative, continuing to oversee the continued improvement of the Aggies' program, guiding UC Davis to a 16-6 overall record (including a perfect 8-0 record at home), a 4-1 Big West mark, and a share of the school's first-ever conference regular season title.
The 16 victories this season represent a school Division I record for wins in a season, surpassing last season's 14-11 overall record, and are the most for the Aggies since they finished 16-3 en route to the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1992. In addition, the four Big West wins are the most in the history of the program after UC Davis had not won more than two conference matches (2010 and 2014) in its previous seven seasons of league membership.
This season, Steidlmayer helped guide the Aggies back into the national rankings for the first time in seven years, debuting in the ITA poll at No. 72 back on Feb. 3, 2015, and ranking as high as No. 53 as of the April 14 poll.
Adamson was named to the All-Big West First Team for the second-straight season in singles play while teaming with Adam Levie to earn second team honors in doubles. Splitting time between the top two spots in the UC Davis singles lineup, Adamson finished 18-13 overall and 11-9 in duals, posting a 6-8 mark at the No. 1 position and a 5-1 record at No. 2.
Alongside Levie, the two combined for a 15-12 overall record and a 9-10 mark in duals as the Aggies' top doubles tandem, including a spectacular fall season that saw the combo advance to the main draw championship at the annual "Battle in the Bay" Classic and the main draw semifinals at the ITA Northwest Regionals.
Wade also was named to the All-Big West singles first team for the second year in a row while also earning all-conference honorable mention honors in doubles alongside freshman teammate Tommy Lam. Wade finished his singles campaign with a 24-11 overall record and a 14-6 mark in dual matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in the singles lineup, posting a 5-2 and 9-4 record, respectively, at those two spots. He shared the team lead in overall wins with Everett Maltby (24-9) and led the team in dual match wins for the second consecutive season.
In doubles, Wade and Lam spent most of the season at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, combining to finish 13-6 overall and 11-4 in duals, including a six-match winning streak to start the spring and another five-match winning streak late in the season.
The Aggies' third doubles team of sophomore Bryce McKelvie and junior Brett Bacharach were also named to the All-Big West doubles second team, finishing 9-7 overall and 6-6 in duals at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The tandem won four straight at one point during the spring and had a spirited run to the semifinals at the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships back in March.
