INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - With wins in six of its final seven matches, UC Davis experienced one of the most successful months of spring tennis, by any of the nine league teams, entering this year's league playoffs. Unfortunately for the Aggies, their season ended in Friday's quarterfinal when No. 57 UC Santa Barbara recorded a 4-0 victory at the Big West Women's Tennis Tournament.
UC Santa Barbara will return to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for Saturday's semifinal with a 15-8 mark; UC Davis ends its season with an 11-12 record.
Even though Layla Sanders and Kristy Jorgensen were on the brink of winning their eighth straight doubles contest, the pair was forced to relocate to other courts for their respective singles matches instead. Even though they were leading 7-4 against Louisa Ortiz Candido and Melissa Baker, the transition from doubles, to singles play commenced once the Gauchos took a 1-0 team lead.
Prior to Friday's quarterfinal, the Aggies won the doubles point in their last seven straight matches.
As the day continued, Jorgensen trailed Natalie Da Silveira, 2-1, Lani-Rae Green trailed Melissa Baker, 3-0, and Tiffany Pham was even with April Scatliffe at 2-2 when play was halted on all three courts. Even though all three Aggies were midway through the third set, competition ended because of what happened in the other three matches.
By winning the first three singles match to finish, combined with their doubles result, the Gauchos officially clinched a spot in Saturday's semifinal by reaching the four-point threshold.
During postseason play, all singles matches in progress end once a team officially wins its match.
As the team's only graduating senior, Friday's contest also marked Sanders' final appearance as an Aggie. By winning 15 doubles matches this year, Sanders equaled the combined number of victories earned throughout her first three seasons.
Even though she was hampered by various injuries since the start of spring play, Sanders was also able to win four matches as her team's No. 1 singles player.
After dropping four of their first five duals, the Aggies entered the conference playoffs with a .500 record thanks to a late-season surge. Including its season-ending seven-game homestand, UC Davis won eight of 12 matches played at the Marya Welch Tennis Center this season.
