IRVINE, Calif. -- With an outright Big West Conference title and the top seed for next week's conference tournament coming down to the final match of the regular season, UC Irvine jumped out quickly and ran off with a 6-1 victory over No. 53 UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The loss ended the Aggies' winning streak at three as they fell to 16-5 overall and 4-1 in league play, sharing their first Big West regular season title with the Anteaters (19-12, 4-1). As the No. 2 seed, UC Davis earns its highest-ever seed for the conference tournament and gains a first-round bye, slated to meet the winner of No. 3 UC Santa Barbara and No. 6 Hawai'i in the semifinals on Friday (April 24) at 3 p.m.
UC Irvine won a pair of doubles contests by 6-3 scores at the top two positions before running through singles, claiming four of its five victories in straight sets. The only "blemish" was Shuhei Shibahara's three-set win over Bryce McKelvie at No. 4, 4-6, 7-5, 13-11.
Sophomore Jesse Ross claimed the Aggies' lone point on the day, rallying from a set down to defeat Rafael Davidian, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot in the lineup. It was Ross' sixth win in eight chances at No. 6, improving him to 11-5 in duals this season.
