DAVIS, Calif. - Cal Poly scored two runs in the top of the first inning of Sunday's Big West Conference series finale at La Rue Field, the Aggies responded by recording one run of their own three innings later and both starting pitchers kept their opponent from scoring throughout the final four innings in a game the Mustangs won, 2-1. 

By dropping the rubber game, UC Davis is now 14 -22 overall and 2-7 against league opponents. Cal Poly will return to San Luis Obispo with a 21-22 and 4-5 mark.

Stephanie Heyward's triple in the top of the first inning drove in Courtney Tyler and Sierra Hyland, who reached on a single to center and walk respectively.

By forcing Ashley Tornio to record the final out of the frame on a grounder to the shortstop, UC Davis starting pitcher Leah Munden limited the damage to only two runs.

Throughout the following six innings, the Mustangs only mustered two hits off the junior southpaw, who finished with five strikeouts.

In the bottom of the third, UC Davis took full advantage of a Cal Poly error to score its lone run of the afternoon.

Originally reaching on a fielder's choice, Christa Castello advanced to second when the Mustangs' second baseman dropped a fly ball. UC Davis took full advantage of Cal Poly's error two batters later when Amy Nunez his a line drive through the left side of the diamond, allowing Castello to score.

A combined 19 runners were left on base throughout the afternoon; both UC Davis and Cal Poly faced an opportunity to score additional runs in the bottom of the fifth, and top of the sixth respectively, but left the bases loaded on each occasion.

Softball will return to action on Saturday, April 18, when the Aggies visit UC Santa Barbara for another Big West weekend series. The Aggies will open a seven-game road swing with that day's 12 p.m. doubleheader.
