DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis freshman Everett Maltby rallied back from a set down to defeat UC Santa Barbara's Erik Johnsson in three sets, lifting the No. 68 Aggies to a narrow 4-3 win over the No. 65 Gauchos on Saturday afternoon in the final home match of the season at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

UC Davis improved to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in Big West Conference play on the year, finishing the season a perfect 8-0 at home and defeating Santa Barbara for the first time in school history. The Gauchos fell to 10-8 overall and had its league mark evened at 2-2, ending a four-match winning streak.

"This was a good win over UC Santa Barbara," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "It was a good day for our doubles teams and then a very gritty -- and a little bit lucky -- performance in singles."

Wins at the top two doubles spots gave the Aggies the early 1-0 lead as the pairings of Alec Adamson and Adam Levie along with Brett Bacharach and Bryce McKelvie posted 6-2 and 6-4 victories, respectively.

The match then shifted to singles play where the Gauchos posted a pair of straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to take the lead, only to have sophomore James Wade tie things up with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Tobias Galskov to make it 2-2. That win was followed by another straight-set victory, this time by Adamson at No. 2, defeating Nathan Eshmade, 7-6, 6-2, to make it 3-2 in favor of the Aggies.

The bottom of the lineup would then decide the match as Teague Hamilton out-lasted Eli Whittle for a marathon, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, win, just moments before Maltby nailed down the winner, defeating Johnsson, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, to end the match.

UC Davis closes out the regular season on the road with a pair of Big West matches in Southern California against UC Riverside on April 18 and UC Irvine on April 19. Both contests begin at 11 a.m. at their respective sites.
