Home runs help Aggies split Saturday's doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. - Following Cal Poly's 2-0 victory in the first game of Saturday's Big West Conference doubleheader at La Rue Field, UC Davis hit two home runs, an inside-the-park and traditional shot, scored twicein the first, second and fifth innings to end the afternoon with a 6-3 victory.

The Aggies will enter Sunday's rubber game with a 14-21 overall and 2-6 league record; Cal Poly will arrive to the diamond with a 20-22 and 3-5 mark.

"We faced Sierra Hyland, a very strong pitcher for Cal Poly, in game one, and made the necessary adjustments throughout game two when we faced her again," said UC Davis head coach Erin Thorpe.

"Rather than dwell on what took place in the first game, this team focused on the areas that needed improvement between games."

All of the runs that were scored in Gm. 1 took place in the first inning; after Hyland hit a sacrifice fly to center field, the final run scored on a single to second base.

After that half inning, a pitchers' duel between UC Davis starter Leah Munden and Hyland took place throughout the rest of the game. Outside of that first inning, Munden only allowed another two hits throughout the following six while Hyland only allowed four during that same timespan.

UC Davis jumped all over Cal Poly early in the second game by scoring twice in the first two innings and held a 4-1 lead.

With Brianna Warner and Alexis Carney each reaching base on back-to-back singles, Amy Nunez drove in the Aggies' first two runs with her single to center.

Even though the Mustangs were able to slice that lead in half by scoring once in the top of the second, UC Davis rebounded by driving in another two in an unusual manner.

With Christa Castello on first after she was able to push the ball between Cal Poly's shortstop and third baseman, Warner brought the fans at La Rue Field to their feet by recording her first home run as an Aggie.

Swinging on a full count, Warner hit a line drive that bounced down the left field line and rolled into the corner. One of the fastest players on the team, if not in the entire league, never stopped running once she dropped the bat by the plate and was halfway towards third before Mustang left fielder Emily Ceccacci fielded the ball. By the time she was able to make a play, Warner had already rounded third and recorded an inside-the-park home run by the time the ball reached the infield.

Three innings later, UC Davis scored for the final time on another home run - this time, in a more traditional manner.

On a 2-1 count, Ashley Lotoszynski turned on a pitch from Hyland and belted a two-run shot that flew over the fence in left center. Once Lotoszynski and Carney, who hit a single in the previous at-bat touched home plate, the Mustangs were unable to muster a comeback thanks to the collective efforts of Aggie pitchers Andrea Reynolds and Alicia Paine.

Reynolds, who picked up the win and improved her record to 3-1, allowed six hits throughout her four innings in the circle before her teammate entered in the top of the fifth.

Outside of a triple recorded by Cal Poly with two outs in the top of the seventh, Paine pitched a flawless three innings to force a rubber-game situation.

"We've been talking to the pitchers throughout the entire year about throwing games as a staff, Andrea and Alicia did a great job," said Thorpe. "I think both pitchers' confidence grew as the game progressed."

First pitch for Sunday's series finale is scheduled for noon.
