LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team closed out its stay in Southern California with its fourth consecutive victory, shutting out Villanova, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, Calif.

The Aggies improved to 11-3 overall this spring, just three wins shy of their total from all of last season. The Wildcats fell to 2-7 overall with the loss.

UC Davis easily swept through doubles, dropping no more than three games in either of the three matches, while taking five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Only sophomore James Wade was extended to three sets, rebounding from a 7-6 loss in the second set to post a 10-6 victory in a third-set tiebreaker to complete the sweep.

For Wade, it was his team-best seventh consecutive victory, improving to 20-7 overall on the year and 10-2 in dual matches. Sophomore Eli Whittle posted his fifth straight win at the No. 5 position, earning his eighth win in 10 matches overall and his fifth in six dual match opportunities.

Meanwhile, at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, a pair of Aggie doubles teams were battling it out in the semifinals of both the main draw and consolation brackets on Sunday morning.

In the main draw, the unseeded tandem of junior Brett Bacharach and sophomore Bryce McKelvie, winners of five straight entering the day, suffered their first loss of the weekend, falling to the eventual champion Nicolai Ferrigno Olsen and Lucas Gerch of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 6-1.

On the consolation side, assistant coach Michael Meyer and former Aggie standout Toki Sherbakov had their four-match winning streak in the tournament come to an end, falling to Peter Smith and Kaes Van't Hof, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
