LOS ANGELES - UC Davis took an early 1-0 lead in Sunday's game at No. 15/13 UCLA, the Aggies' last at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, but a four-run fifth inning propelled the host Bruins to a 10-2 victory in six innings.
UC Davis will return to La Rue Field on Tuesday, to host Sacramento State, with a 9-13 overall record. UCLA improves to 22-5 on the season with the result.
A five-pitch leadoff walk from Amy Nunez in the second inning led to the Aggies' first run of the day. Advancing to second when Krista Bava earned UC Davis' second straight base on balls, Katie Robertson pushed Nunez to third when she was hit by a pitch. Alexandra Sotomayor's fly ball to right center was deep enough to allow Nunez to race home and score on a sacrifice fly.
UCLA responded by scoring two runs in the bottom half of that inning, and another in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead.
The Aggies remained within striking distance, and pulled themselves within two runs, when Alexis Carney hit a home run to left center. That shot was her second of the season, and pulled her even with Ashley Lotoszynski for the most hit by an Aggie this season.
The Bruins extended their 4-2 lead by scoring another four runs in the bottom of the fifth, and tacked on another two in the following frame to end Saturday's game prematurely.
Carney finished 2-for-3 at the plate as she also led off the third inning with a single to left field. Christina Guidry, Lotoszynski and Sotomayor recorded the other three hits for UC Davis.
