LOS ANGELES - Shortstop Christa Castello and first baseman Amy Nunez each collected two hits while sophomore Dana Cruse scattered four hits and a run across five innings to lead UC Davis to a 3-1 victory over Illinois at UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sunday at Easton Stadium.

The Aggies then lost to the 15th/13th-ranked host by an 8-0 final, moving to 9-12 for the year.

Castello, Christina Guidry, Alexis Carney and Kelly Zboralske all rapped out consecutive singles in a three-run first inning against the Illini. Carney drove in Castello for the first run with her safety to left, Zboralske singled up the middle to push Guidry across, then Nunez delivered a one-out hit to plate Carney for the third run.

Meanwhile, Cruse did not allow a hit until Illinios senior Nicole Evans pounded out a double into the left-center gap with two down in the fourth. However, Cruse got catcher Jess Perkins to bounce out to Castello to end the threat. Illinois threatened again in the fifth then Kylie Johnson sent a hit to right. Carly Thomas, who led off the frame with a hit, attempted to score from second but Aggie sophomore right fielder Brianna Warner gunned her down at the plate with an outfield assist.

The Illini finally spoiled the upset bid in the sixth when UC Davis reliever Leah Munden hit Thomas with the bases loaded, bringing in Alyssa Gunther for the lone Illinois tally.

Munden escaped the jam when Castello ran down a foul ball for the third out. The Aggie lefty put down Illinois in order in the seventh for her first save of the year.

UC Davis went from nine hits in its victory to just three in a shutout loss to the Bruins. Castello had two of the three, singling in the first and third innings but getting stranded at second after each. UCLA scored one in the second and one in the third before a bases-loaded triple by freshman first baseman Maddy Jelenicki capped a six-run sixth that invoked the eight-run rule.

Impressively, Castello's only out against UCLA was also her first strikeout of the season, ending a streak of 143 consecutive at-bats without a whiff, dating back to March 16, 2014.

The Aggies close out the tourney against UCLA at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
