March 7, 2015 Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship Draws
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis doubles duo of junior Brett Bacharach and sophomore Bryce McKelvie continued to roll on day three of the 126th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championships, winning two marathon matches to earn a spot in the semifinals at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club on Saturday.
After posting three victories on day two of the championships Friday, the unseeded tandem of Bacharach and McKelvie won a pair of third-set tiebreaks to advance, upsetting sixth-seeded Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek of San Diego, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), to start the day. Later, the Aggies scored a quarterfinal win over UC San Diego's Axel Bouillin and Rajeev Herekar, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5), in a contest that took nearly three hours.
Bacharach and McKelvie will face Oklahoma State's Nicolai Ferrigno Olsen and Lucas Gerch in the first semifinal of the day on Sunday at 9 a.m. The winner takes on either USC's top-seeded tandem of Thibault Forget and Robert Quiroz, or UCLA's seventh-seeded team of Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell, in the championship at 1:30 p.m.
Live streaming audio play-by-play of both semifinals and the championship will be available at RadioTennis.com.
Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket, the ninth-seeded team of assistant coach Michael Meyer and former Aggie Toki Sherbakov also advanced to the semifinals, posting a pair of wins on Saturday to advance. The duo opened with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Villanova's Bradley Noyes and Christopher Seitz, before downing Rice's Srikar Alla and unattached Efe Ustundag, 6-2, 6-3.
Meyer and Sherbakov will face another coach-player tandem of USC head coach Peter Smith and former Pac-10 singles and doubles champion Kaes Van't Hof on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. It will be the second meeting between Smith and Van't Hof and a UC Davis doubles team after they were eliminated from the main draw by Bacharach and McKelvie in the round of 64.
The winner will meet the California duo of Andre Goransson and J.T. Nishimura in the consolation championship at Noon.
Following play at the championships on Sunday, the Aggies are scheduled to face off against Villanova in a neutral site dual match at 3 p.m., at the Northview Tennis Courts on the campus of UC San Diego.
