UC Davis-Illinois Box Score | Providence-UC Davis Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning in Friday afternoon's tournament opener at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, UC Davis tied the game when Ashley Lotoszynski scored on an Illinois throwing error. However, that score remained untouched for a short period of time as the Fighting Illini plated the game-winning run in the bottom of that same inning to defeat the Aggies by a 5-4 score.

After an extended break that lasted nearly five hours, UC Davis returned to Easton Stadium to face Providence in the final game of the day. Providence started strong by scoring the first three runs by either team, but a seven-run fifth inning gave the Aggies a 7-3 lead.

That score remained untouched for the rest of the night to give Aggie reliever Alicia Paine her first win of the year.

UC Davis will continue tournament play on Saturday with an 8-11 record.

In the opening game of the tournament, Illinois scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth before the Aggies responded with three of their own in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

With the bases loaded, Christina Guidry reached on a bunt single before Lotoszynski and Alexandra Sotomayor each walked. Krista Bava then emptied the bases with one swing by hitting her second double of the season.

In the bottom of that same frame, Illinois regained its lead by scoring one run in a similar manner. Kylie Johnson led off the inning with a bunt single, her teammate, Allie Bauch, recorded an RBI on a double.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the top of the seventh when the Aggies tied the score at 4-4 by taking full advantage of a throwing error committed by Illini third baseman Danielle Trezzo. In an attempt to throw out Janelle Gusiff at first, Trezzo committed the miscue, which allowed Lotoszynski to score from second.

Lotoszynski initially reached base on her leadoff single to left before Phalen Cochran pushed her to scoring position by earning a base on balls.

As was the case in the bottom of the fifth, Illinois immediately responded to an Aggie scoring opportunity by creating one of its own by hitting back-to-back doubles.

In Friday's nightcap, UC Davis trailed Providence, 3-0, entering the bottom of the fifth innings before the Aggies hung seven runs on the scoreboard. All but one were recorded with two outs.

Kelly Zboralske started the Aggies' rally by leading off with a single to left center. A sacrifice bunt from Brianna Warner advanced her to second; Jasmine Lee's single through the middle of the diamond allowed her to advance to third. Zboralske eventually scored on a fielder's choice to the shortstop during Christa Castello's at-bat.

That one run ruined the Friars' shutout bid and, most importantly, spearheaded a jaw-dropping, come-from-behind effort that saw UC Davis enter the following inning with a 7-3 lead.

A double from Guidry, and three consecutive singles from Alexis Carney, Lotoszynski and Zboralske, who returned to the plate as the inning continued, added another four runs to UC Davis' half of the scoreboard.

With the bases still loaded, Warner forced another run across the plate by drawing a five-pitch walk before the Friars recorded the final out of the inning.

In all, the Aggies scored seven runs on six hits; six of those runs were scored with two outs.

After securing a split on Friday, UC Davis will return to action on Saturday to face Illinois for the final time this weekend, and No. 15/13 UCLA in the first of consecutive matchups against the Bruins.

The Aggies will end their Stacy Winsberg schedule on Sunday against the tournament hosts. Live stats links for both Saturday games are available at ucdavisaggies.com.
