Aggies pull away late to beat Bakersfield

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in Sunday's finale at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, Christa Castello singled to center field to give UC Davis a 3-2 lead, Amy Nunez drove Krista Bava home with her double to left center and Castello scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to help the Aggies defeat Bakersfield, 5-2.

UC Davis will leave Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas, and enter Tuesday's 2015 home opener, against Pacific, with a 1-4 overall record - a mark that includes three games against ranked competition throughout its season-opening tournament.

By throwing three innings of shutout softball, Andrea Reynolds picks up softball's first win of the season. Justine Vela started Sunday's game, threw for three full innings and, like Reynolds, allowed four hits.

Sandwiched between those performances was a one-inning appearance by Dana Cruse.

Bava started UC Davis' day with a single that split the Roadrunners' first and second basemen, then stole second base shortly thereafter to place herself in scoring position moments after swinging the bat for the first time in Sunday's game. Able to reach third on a throwing error that allowed Castello to reach first, Bava scored when Nunez, the very next batter, hit into a fielder's choice to the shortstop.

Even though Bakersfield evened the score in the top of the second inning, the Aggies responded in their next set of at-bats to regain the lead.

As was the case with Bava the previous inning, Kaila Olson reached base on a six-pitch, leadoff walk, then advanced to scoring position when Alexis Sotomayor dropped a textbook sacrifice bunt to push her teammate to second.

A deep fly to right by Bava allowed Olson to reach third; she scampered home after `Runner right fielder Julea Cavazos committed a throwing error in an attempt to cap a double play at third.

UC Davis held a 2-1 lead until Bakersfield pulled even in its half of the fourth. For the next two innings, the score remained untouched until the Aggies broke the game wide open with its sixth-inning scoring rally.

With one out already recorded, Sotomayor and Bava drew back-to-back walks. The former scored when Castello singled to center, the latter touched the plate during the following at-bat when Nunez belted her second double of the weekend.

Castello recorded the final run of the inning when Lyndsay Klimenko threw a wild pitch, extending the Aggies' advantage to three runs.

Once UC Davis returned to the diamond, Reynolds allowed a leadoff single, and nothing else as she fanned Natalie Saucedo and forced Sabrina Perez to hit a line drive to Castello.

After the second out was earned, Castello immediately threw to Nunez at first to pick off Briana Pontecorvo on a game-ending double play.

UC Davis will enjoy a brief break before competing in its first game of the season at La Rue Field when the Pacific Tigers visit on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.; KDVS will call the action live on an internet-only radio broadcast.
