SAN DIEGO - UC Davis left-hander Leah Munden opened the San Diego Classic I, a tournament co-hosted by San Diego and San Diego State, by throwing a complete-game shutout, the second of her career, to lift UC Davis to a 1-0 win over Iowa State Friday morning at the USD Softball Complex.
Following a brief break, the Aggies returned to action against Grand Canyon, and started its afternoon contest by recording their first two runs in the top of the first inning. However, a 10-run scoring outburst by Grand Canyon in the second inning prevented the Aggies from earning a sweep as the Antelopes downed UC Davis, 12-5, in five innings.
UC Davis will kick-off Saturday's schedule at 9 a.m., against the defending national champions No. 1/1 Florida, then face North Dakota immediately thereafter at 11:30 a.m.
The Aggies will enter day two in San Diego with a 5-9 overall record.

In UC Davis' tournament opener against Iowa State, Amy Nunez' leadoff single to right field, with two outs in the second inning, led to the game's only run. Advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt dropped by Christina Guidry, the senior first baseman placed herself 60 feet from scoring when Lauren Saunders hit a shot to the opposite side of the diamond at second.
Ashley Lotoszynski's hit to center, one that was misplayed by Cyclone outfielder Brittany Gomez, allowed Nunez to score.
Returning to the circle with a one-run lead, Munden threw a gem throughout the following four innings to help her team earn its first one-run win of the year. In all, the southpaw struckout four, allowed only four Iowa State hits once UC Davis took the lead en route to her third win of the season (out of UC Davis' five earned in 2015).
When each team competed at the Division II level, UC Davis won three of four head-to-head matchups against Grand Canyon. As Division I teams, the Antelopes now hold the advantage after winning their inaugural meeting against the Aggies.
UC Davis started the back half of its doubleheader strong by taking a 2-0 lead before Grand Canyon even took its first set of swings.
In the top of the first, Christa Castello reached base on a single to third, Alexis Carney soon joined her teammate after drawing a walk. Each advanced one base on a successful fielder's choice play, on a bunt, no less, from Guidry. In an attempt to end the inning on the Aggies' following at-bat, GCU second baseman Camree Wartman committed an error while trying to throw out Kelly Zboralske at first.
Not only was Wartman unsuccessful in recording that third out, Castello and Carney trotted home on the play.
Wartman redeemed herself in the bottom of the second as her leadoff home run sparked a 10-run, eight-hit rally that gave Grand Canyon a 10-2 lead entering the third inning. In all, GCU batted through its lineup, three Antelopes faced Aggie pitchers on two occasions in their half of the frame and two players hit home runs.
Grand Canyon scored another two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and could have tacked on even more if not for an outstanding play turned by Aggie centerfielder Krista Bava, and catcher Katie Robertson.
With two runs already recorded, Bava scooped up a single from Antelope centerfielder Haley Walker an immediately threw a rocket towards home. Once caught by Robertson, she turned and tagged Hailey Mahler who tried to record her team's third run of the frame.
Mahler's mission was a failure, and UC Davis returned to bat in the top of the fifth with momentum on its side.
Down by 10 and on the precipice of being run-ruled, UC Davis started the inning with consecutive hit-by-pitches, followed by a wild pitch which allowed Alicia Paine and Castello advance to third and second respectively.
A sacrifice fly to center from Nunez allowed Paine to score and Castello to reach third, a groundout to the pitcher by Guidry enabled Castello to slice the Antelopes' lead to eight.
That Aggie deficit remained untouched for the rest of the inning as GCU recorded the final out to improve its record to 8-11 heading into its next tournament game.
