Aggies edged by Dons to end streak

SAN FRANCISCO -- The doubles point proved to be decisive on Friday afternoon in the Bay Area as San Francisco took two out of three doubles contests, then battled visiting UC Davis to a split of the six singles matches, carrying the Dons to a 4-3 upset of the No. 70 Aggies at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The loss ends UC Davis' six-match winning streak as the Aggies fell to 7-3 overall on the year. USF moved to 2-3 overall on the year with the win, improving to 7-0 against UC Davis since the Aggies made the jump to Division I in 2008 and posting its second straight 4-3 win in the series.

Sophomore James Wade at No. 2, junior Brett Bacharach at No. 3, and freshman Everett Maltby at No. 6, each posting singles victories on the day -- all coming in straight sets. Bacharach and Maltby extended personal winning streaks to four straight matches, defeating James Tallman (6-4, 6-3) and Alex Santiago (6-1, 6-1), respectively, while Wade won his third straight match, handing Nils Skajaa a 7-5, 6-4, defeat.

Wade and Maltby are now tied for the team lead with 16 wins overall this season, while Wade matches teammate Jesse Ross with his team-best sixth dual match victory of the year -- all at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

However, the decisive blow was dealt early as the Dons claimed victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles spots -- including a 6-2 win by the No. 31 doubles tandem in the nation of Skajaa and Bernardo Saraiva -- for a 1-0 lead in the match.

UC Davis closes out the weekend with a Sunday doubleheader (Feb. 22), welcoming Nevada and Sonoma State to the Marya Welch Tennis Center for back-to-back duals beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Davis. The two matches were rescheduled from Feb. 8 due to rain.
