DE-FENSE! DE-FENSE!: The Aggies go in search of an unprecedented third consecutive MPSF crown this week after claiming their second straight title in 2014 with a score of 712.5 to ease past second-place UC Santa Barbara (638) -- the third-highest winning total in the history of the championship. UC Davis has won three of the possible four MPSF titles dating back to 2011, winning the championship in 2011, 2013, and 2014. BYU broke up the string by winning the title in 2012.

UC DAVIS AT THE MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS
2010-11: 726 points (1st of 9 teams)
2011-12: 546 (3rd of 10; BYU 1st - 732)
2012-13: 673.5 (1st of 8)
2013-14: 712.5 (1st of 8)

2014 MPSF RECAP: Trailing after day one of last season's MPSF Championships, the Aggies stormed back to regain the lead on day two and they would never look back, posting the third-highest team total (712.5) in conference championship history to sprint past second-place UC Santa Barbara (638) and third-place BYU (620). UC Davis qualified a pair of swimmers (Liliana Alvarez and Hilvy Cheung) to the NCAA Championships while the Aggies combined to claim a total of 32 all-conference honors at the end of the year. Cheung, who scored 43 points in three events at last year's conference championship meet, was named the MPSF Freshman of the Year and finished 49th in the 100 fly (53.80) and 37th in the 200 fly (1:58.57) at the NCAA Championships, while Alvarez, who won the 100 breaststroke at the MPSF's for the fourth consecutive season, finished 36th in the 100 breast (1:01.25) and 46th in the 200 breast (2:12.97) at the NCAA meet. It was a fitting end for a UC Davis squad that finished off the first perfect dual season in school history (9-0).

LAST TIME OUT: Senior Samantha Shellem finished first in two freestyle races plus the 200 IM, while Hilvy Cheung, Hilary Hunt and Audrey DeNeffe also won two events each, leading the Aggies to a 158-115 victory over Pacific back on Jan. 31 in the team's regular season finale. In addition to anchoring the winning 200 medley relay (1.45.20), Shellem won the 200 free (1.50.89), 100 free (51.73), and 200 IM (2.05.83). Cheung won the 200 fly by four seconds (2.02.30) along with the 100 fly (55.34). Hunt swept the backstrokes (100-56.60; 200-2.05.33) and DeNeffe swept the diving boards (1M-258.15; 3M-288.525).

DECORATED TRIO: Shellem (twice), Cheung (twice), and Hilary Hunt, have each been earned MPSF/Turbo Female Athlete of the Week honors this season from the conference coaches, giving the Aggies more weekly award winners than any other MPSF school this season. For Shellem, the honors were the fourth and fifth of her UC Davis career, took home her first honor following a big weekend against LMU and Fresno State on Nov. 5, and added another after helping lead the Aggies over Pacific. Cheung won six events in meets against San Jose State and a non-scoring meet at Pacific on Oct. 22 and on Dec. 10 after totaling three NCAA "B" cuts at the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invitational in Austin. Hunt earned her first career weekly honor from the MPSF on Nov. 12, after setting then-MPSF best times in the 100 and 200 back against Nevada.

STREAKING AGGIES: While their overall dual meet win streak of 16 consecutive victories was snapped in the season opener against San Jose State, the Aggies kept alive another run with their win over Pacific in the regular season finale, clinching their 12th consecutive regular season victory over MPSF rivals. UC Davis' last loss to an MPSF school in a dual came on Jan. 28, 2012, in a narrow 159-141 loss to UC Santa Barbara.

UNBEATEN: With her win over Pacific back on Jan. 31, sophomore Hilvy Cheung remained unbeaten in the 200 fly this season, claiming individual honors in six of the seven duals for the Aggies in 2014-15 (she was not entered in the event against LMU on Nov. 1), and posting a season-best time of 1:57.50 at the Texas Hall of Fame Invitational on Dec. 6 -- earning her second of two NCAA "B" marks in Austin. She has also posted the fastest time in the 100 fly in six duals this season (she had the lowest time in the event against BYU and LMU, but her times were exhibitioned after the Aggies clinched the meet) and finished second against Nevada on Nov. 8. Senior Hilary Hunt has also been near perfect this season in the 100 back, winning the event in each of the last six duals after finishing third in the opener against San Jose State.

ZONED IN: Both Audrey DeNeffe and Lucy Lafranchise have bested the marks to qualify for this season's NCAA Zone "E" Diving Championships on March 9-11 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, including a pair of school records by DeNeffe on both the 1- and 3-meter boards against Nevada on Nov. 8. DeNeffe set new program bests with a score of 278.55 on the low board and 296.85 on the high board against the Wolf Pack, easily besting the qualifying marks of 265.00 and 280.00, respectively. Lafranchise also is Colorado-bound following a pair of career-high marks, scoring a 275.85 on Oct. 17 against San Jose State on the low board, and a 282.45 on Nov. 8 against Nevada on the high board.

TORCHING THE RELAYS: Following a slow start to the year, the Aggies have rebounded to dominate relay swims this season, posting the fastest times in the MPSF in the 800 free (7:21.75), 200 medley (1:41.91), and 400 medley (3:42.15) relays, while ranking among the top three in both the 200 free (1:33.71) and 400 free (3:24.88). UC Davis has posted the fastest times in the various relays in eight of its last 10 swims over the last five duals -- including a pool record in the 200 free relay of 1:36.57, set by Hilary Hunt, Courtney Schultz, Hilvy Cheung, and Brittany Rojo, that bettered the previous mark by four-tenths and held by a quartet from Washington State since 2006.
