MORAGA, Calif. -- Make it five-in-a-row for the No. 72 UC Davis men's tennis team, which dropped only one of nine matches on Sunday morning and won all six singles contests in straight sets en route to a 7-0 shutout of host Saint Mary's at the Timothy Korth Tennis Center.
The Aggies improved to 6-2 overall on the season, continuing an unbeaten run (4-0) against West Coast Conference opponents this season and posting their first regular season shutout since a 7-0 win over Hawai'i-Hilo on March 25, 2014. The Gaels fell to 1-6 overall with the loss.
"This was a solid team victory today," Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer said. "I am pleased with the effort and competitiveness we have shown. Now we have to get ready and get up for a game Holy Names team tomorrow."
UC Davis claimed the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match, taking two-of-three from Saint Mary's to go up 1-0. The duo of James Wade and Tommy Lam finished first with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot, followed by the team of Brett Bacharach and Eli Whittle, who posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 to clinch the point.
The roll continued on into singles play, where the Aggies took home straight set wins at all six positions en route to the win. Freshman Everett Maltby had the toughest set of the day, pulling off a 7-5 win in the opening set against Nash Vollenweider at No. 5, and completing the victory with a 6-3 win in the second set. Maltby improved to a team-best 15-5 overall and 4-2 in dual match play with the win.
Wade also earned his 15th win of the year, defeating Thomas Hunt at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-4, to post his fifth dual match win in eight tries, matching teammate Jesse Ross for the most on the team.
No other Aggie lost more than four games, including sophomore Alec Adamson, who became the sixth UC Davis player to reach double-digit wins this season (10-8 overall) with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Arthur Weber at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
UC Davis closes out its holiday weekend with an afternoon clash against Holy Names University on Monday (Feb. 16) at 2 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
