Titans will remember the Aggies after their epic comeback

FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton may have enjoyed a strong start in Saturday's Big West matchup at Titan Courts by winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches, but it was UC Davis that experienced a furious finish by winning the last four singles contests to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 victory.

The Aggies have now earned a victory in their last three Big West openers and 5 of 8 since joining the Big West Conference in 2007.

UC Davis will continue its inaugural set of league matches on Sunday, at CSUN - the second of three straight Big West matches in as many days - with a 3-4 overall and 1-0 conference record. Cal State Fullerton falls to 3-4 and 1-1 with Saturday's result.

First serve from the Matador Tennis Complex is set for 1 p.m.

After Cal State Fullerton took all three doubles matches, the Titans tripled their 1-0 lead by winning the first two singles matches.

It was then when Frederique Sleiffer fueled UC Davis' comeback by defeating Michelle Erasmus, 6-1 and 6-3, to earn the Aggies' inaugural team point.

After winning her first set tiebreaker, 7-4, Pham recorded UC Davis' second consecutive straight-set sweep by topping the Titans' Megan Sandford, 6-3, in the final frame.

At that point of the day, Cal State Fullerton still led by a 3-2, overall team score and needed just one victory out of the final two matchups that were still in action to secure its second Big West triumph of the season.

UC Davis, however, had other plans.

When Jesse Lee swept Danielle Pham, 6-4, 7-6, after taking her second set tiebreak by a 7-5 result, all attention shifted to the No. 4 matchup between Kristy Jorgensen and Emilia Borkowski - the final singles matchup of the day.

Jorgensen won the first set, 6-4, and faced an opportunity to win the second heading into that set's tiebreaker. A third set was ultimately needed after Borkowski pulled through by winning that decisive tiebreak, 7-2, to extend Saturday's battle at No. 4 singles by one more frame.

When it mattered the most - with an overall team victory on the line - Jorgensen pulled away to win the final set of the day by a 6-2 margin, to complete the Aggies' epic comeback and hand a gut-wrenching loss to a team that was on the verge of collecting its fourth home win of 2015.

Jorgensen is now 3-1 in her last four singles contests and has also collected victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions this season.
