DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's tennis team had no love for its Causeway Cup rival on Valentine's Day, sweeping through doubles play and claiming wins in five of the six singles matches on Saturday afternoon to lift the No. 72 Aggies to a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

Following a two-week layoff due to weather, UC Davis improved to 5-2 overall on the season with the win, notching its second straight win over the Hornets following a seven-match losing streak to its rival. Sacramento State had its record evened at 2-2 with the loss.

The day began with a trio of tough doubles victories to take an early 1-0 lead in the match, battling into tiebreakers in all three contests, before posting 7-6 wins at all three positions.

Singles play proved to be a somewhat easier task for UC Davis, which claimed five of the six contests -- four of those wins in straight sets. Freshman Everett Maltby was the only one pushed to the limit, rebounding from a 7-5 loss in the opening set to defeat Kasparas Zemaitelis, 5-7, 6-1, 10-7.

Sophomore Jesse Ross won his fourth straight match to remain undefeated (3-0) at the No. 6 spot in the lineup, posting a 6-1, 6-1, win over Tom Miller to improve to a team-best 5-2 in duals this season and 11-7 overall. Sophomore James Wade matched Maltby with his 14th win of the year overall, defeating Niranjan Ram, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2.

Junior Brett Bacharach and sophomore Bryce McKelvie added to the score with their wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively. Bacharach dropped just one game in his 6-1, 6-0, win over Roy Brandys, while McKelvie battled for a straight-set, 6-2, 7-5, win over Marek Marksoo.

The Aggies continue their busy holiday weekend schedule on the road on Sunday (Feb. 15) at Noon, traveling to Moraga, California, to take on Saint Mary's.
