Rookies lead Aggies to upset at Cal Poly

Nov. 7, 2015

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Redshirt freshman middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri hit an errorless 10-for-24 with seven blocks while true freshmen Malia Bolko and Emily Allen combined for 46 of their team's 90 digs, helping UC Davis take down Cal Poly in five sets, 14-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13, in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Mott Athletics Center Saturday.

The Aggies improve to 13-14 for the season and 8-5 in league matches. The Mustangs, playing in their second consecutive five-set match, slip to 17-6 overall and 9-3 in Big West play.

Senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres led four UC Davis players with double-digit kills at 19, along with junior Kendall Walbrecht (14), freshman Nicola Moore (11) and Ohiri. Squyres also amassed 15 digs and tied her career high of five blocks, including four solo stuffs. Bolko missed her career best by one with 27 digs while Allen scooped up 19. The Aggies opted for their 6-2 system in Saturday's win, with junior Sophia Mar and freshman Maddie Merlino combining on 54 assists.

For Cal Poly, freshman Adlee Van Winden led offensively with 22 kills on 64 swings. Senior Nicole Kessler and freshman Katherine Brouker anchored the back row with dig totals of 25 and 23, respectively. Setter Taylor Nelson managed another 18 digs to supplement her 52 assists.

The Mustangs pulled away from a late 17-14 battle in the first set, with Savannah Nieman and Hannah Schleis combining on a pair of blocks in a 7-0 run that established a 24-14 set point. Nieman scored the winner two points later to give Cal Poly the initial match lead. Moore and Walbrecht managed three kills each but UC Davis was stifled to a .133 average, mostly due to 23 Mustang digs.

The offensive scripts flipped in the second frame as the Aggies improved to .333 hitting on 16 kills and just three errors, while Cal Poly stumbled to a .091 success rate. Allen, Moore and a third freshman, middle blocker Lauren Jackson, combined for 10 of those kills. UC Davis enjoyed a 7-1 run to pull away from a tight 12-11 margin. A net violation put the Mustangs to within a 20-16 deficit until Allen and Ohiri scored back-to-back kills and Walbrecht came up with a solo block to increase the Aggie lead to seven. Allen scored the set-winner with her roll shot from the left side, tying the match score at 1-1 heading into the break.

The Mustangs never trailed in the third, with Van Winden scoring three straight kills in a 5-2 start. The Cal Poly freshman totaled eight kills in the frame, including the one that set the board at 24-17. Cal Poly committed only three hitting errors in a set that featured 51 combined digs – 26 by the Mustangs, 25 by the Aggies. Bolko had 11 of those pickups but her team only managed to convert 12 of 26 side-out opportunities.

Six ties and four lead changes highlighted the fourth, although UC Davis stayed in front for the second half of the set once a 4-0 serving run behind Allen crafted an 11-8 edge. Much of the damage came from the two right-side hitters down the stretch, with Moore driving home two kills to set the board at 14-10 and Walbrecht pounding out three in a five-point span to 18-16. Squyres had two of her solo blocks in the fourth, including one against Gruenewald along the left pin for the 23th point. She came across to the right side for her 15th kill of the match and a 24-20 set point, then Walbrecht's tool closed the fourth to force the rubber set.

UC Davis stumbled into a 3-0 hole to start the fifth with a pair of cross-court shots missing wide, but settled down to score six of the next seven points for a 6-4 lead. Van Winden had four kills through the middle of the stanza but the Mustangs never regained the lead despite four straight ties. Another Squyres solo block pushed the Aggies up by 12-10. The senior and conference kills leader smacked down to more to finish the set.

The Mustangs entered the week ranked 81st in Monday's NCAA RPI. They had moved up to second place in the Big West standings after Friday's marathon win over UC Irvine, but the loss to UC Davis will now move them into third behind Long Beach State. Meanwhile, the Aggies remain in fourth place with their 8-5 record.

The 90 digs is UC Davis' highest single-match total since picking up 113 against Cal State Fullerton back on Nov. 2, 2013.

The Aggies return to action against first-place Hawai'i on November 15 as part of a Sunday doubleheader with men's basketball. First serve is 1 p.m.
