FULLERTON, Calif. - Friday's Big West Conference matchup at Cal State Fullerton featured first-place UC Davis and last year's regular season and league tournament champions. As expected, an intense and well-played battle took place at Titan Stadium as both teams entered the break scoreless. Things stayed that way once play resumed until the host Titans scored the only goal of the evening in the 64th minute to defeat the Aggies, 1-0, and snap their four-match unbeaten streak.
UC Davis will now enter Sunday's 1 p.m. match, at UC Riverside, with an 8-4-2 overall record and 1-1-1 league mark. Cal State Fullerton remains undefeated at home this season and is now 9-2-1 and 1-1.
Cal State Fullerton downed UC Davis by doing something very few teams have done to the Aggies this season - score a goal - sing UC Davis entered Friday's matchup with a league-low goals against average and a league-high shutout total.
In addition to suffering its first league loss of the season, Aggie goalkeeper Alexis Smith's shutout streak also ended. Prior to the Titans' strike, the redshirt freshman did not allow a goal in the preceding 481:08.
Earlier this year, Smith held a scoreless streak of 504:36.
Each team recorded five shots; Crystal Crump, Haley Hughes, Mandy McKeegan, Ana Marija Sola and Kristina Sola comprised the Aggies' total while three Titans were responsible for all of their team's attempts.
Shots from Crump and A. Sola required saves from Cal State Fullerton's netminder; the Titans' only shot on goal was the difference in Friday's road match.
