Aggies push into semis after day one at Pacific

Oct. 30, 2015

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Junior Bryce McKelvie won a pair of singles contests, and both of the Aggies' doubles teams followed suit, all earning berths in the semifinals to highlight the UC Davis men's tennis team's first day of play at the 2015 Pacific Tiger Invitational on Friday at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts in Stockton, Calif.

McKelvie was the big winner on the day, opening with a straight-set win over Saint Mary's James Markiewicz, 6-3, 6-3, before rebounding following an opening-set loss to defeat Fresno State's Youssef Hassan, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. He then joined teammate Tommy Lam in the Flight "A" doubles main draw, cruising to a pair of easy wins over doubles teams from Sonoma State and Nevada.

McKelvie will face third-seeded Alex Hunt of Saint Mary's in one of two Flight "A" semifinals on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., after rejoining Lam for a semifinal battle in doubles against top-seeded Hunt and Markiewicz in an 8:30 a.m. doubles semifinal.

Lam, who entered the tournament unbeaten in doubles this fall, posted a first-round singles win of his own, defeating Fresno State's Jeremy Moser, 6-3, 6-1. His singles run would end, however, in the quarterfinals, falling to top-seeded Sem Verbeek of Pacific, 6-2, 6-1.

The second-seeded tandem of Jesse Ross and Eli Whittle are into the semifinals of Flight "B" doubles following a first-round bye, posting a 6-1 win over San Francisco's Jason Lee and Marco Barretto. Ross and Whittle will battle Saint Mary's Manuel De Luis Lamales and Nash Vollenweider on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.

In other singles action, Ross fell in the first round to Nevada's Mile Cilic in a marathon three-set contest, 6-7 (3), 7-6, (5), 6-1, before running out of gas in the consolation bracket against Pacific's Bernardo Oliveria in straight sets.

Top-seeded Eli Whittle was upset in his opening round Flight "B" contest to the Gaels' De Luis Lamales, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, but advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket thanks to a gutty 3-6, 7-6 (9), 1-0 (8), win over the Tigers' Kumara Adavelly and a quarterfinal bye. He will face Nevada's Jonathan Aremon at 9:30 a.m.
