Squyres, defense dominate Titans in Big West play

Oct. 24, 2015

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior outside hitter Kaylin Squyres tallied 14 kills, freshman libero Malia Bolko picked up 24 digs, and the UC Davis collectively totaled 11 blocks to take a 25-18, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference women's volleyball action at Titan Gym Saturday night.

The Aggies move to 10-13 for the year and 5-4 in conference. The Titans remain winless at 0-20 overall and 0-8 in Big West play.

Squyres committed only three errors on 35 swings for a .314 average. Freshman middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri chipped in 7-for-16 attacking for a .438 clip while true freshman Lauren Jackson scored five kills with four blocks in front of her hometown crowd. Junior outside hitter Kendall Walbrecht added nine kills and matched Jackson's total of four blocks.

For CSF, senior middle blocker Kandace Thomas managed nine kills, two solo blocks and a .350 success rate but overall the Titans hit just .061 to their guests' .291 average. Their 13 errors in the third pulled their average to a minus-.085 in the finale. Junior libero Paige Reed tallied 21 digs while sophomore Kyra Hill put down a team-leading 11 kills.

Walbrecht scored three kills and a solo stuff to help UC Davis pull from a 7-6 deficit to a 13-8 lead in the first set. The Aggies never trailed after that point, although the Titans managed to cut the deficit to two on four occasions. Squyres highlighted a 5-0 run with two kills down the final stretch to help UC Davis acquire the early match lead.

The Aggies largely chased the second set, falling into an early 7-4 hole after a UC Davis service error and a block by Thomas and freshman middle Summer Kerins. Smith put down consecutive kills to keep the Titans in front by 14-11. After the two teams battled to three more ties, Squyres had two kills and Walbrecht and Jackson each had one amidst a 6-1 run that set the board at 21-17 in UC Davis' favor. Two more Aggie hitting errors allowed the Titans back to a 23-23 impasse, but Squyres scored the go-ahead to convert the side out and put freshman Emily Allen at the service line. A Fullerton error delivered the Aggies the 25th point and a 2-0 match lead at the break.

The pattern continued into the third, with the Titans opening to a 5-3 start before the Aggies answered with six of the next seven to craft a 9-6 advantage. Squyres had two kills and Jackson posted a kill and a block assist in that run. UC Davis continued to pull away after that, later enjoying an 8-2 stretch that set its lead at 20-10. The net defense closed out the match with Jackson and freshman opposite Nicola Moore combining on an assisted block for match point, then Squyres knocking down a Smith shot for a solo block.

Junior setter Sophia Mar totaled 38 assists in running the Aggie offense to better than .300 in each of the first and third frames.

UC Davis returns home for a weekend series with CSUN and Long Beach State on Thursday and Saturday.
