SACRAMENTO -- Brad Bumgarner's sixth goal of the year off a pass from Cesar Mendoza in the ninth minute proved to be the only score of the match on Saturday afternoon, lifting host Sacramento State to a key, 1-0, Big West Conference victory over UC Davis at Hornet Field.

The loss was the second straight for the Aggies, who fell to 7-8-2 overall and 3-3-2 in league play, but remain in possession of the third and final berth in this year's conference tournament -- one point ahead of their Causeway rivals. Sacramento State improved to 6-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in league, holding the tiebreaker over UC Davis should the two schools finish in a tie in the standings.

A golden opportunity to take the early lead was denied by Hornets' goalkeeper James Del Curto just two minutes into the match when a foul in the box gave the Aggies a penalty kick at the 1:50 mark. Leading scorer Lucas Mohageg stepped to the spot, but was turned away when Del Curto dove to the right and saved the attempt to keep the match scoreless.

Neither team had a shot until freshman Kristian Heptner's attempt went wide in the eighth minute, setting up Bumgarner's strike at the 8:36 mark as Mendoza led his teammate with a pass to the right side of the box and the Hornets' freshman finished low to the far post for the 1-0 advantage.

Despite a 12-11 shot advantage for the night, the Aggies managed to put only three of those on frame as Del Curto also turned away shots by Heptner in the 35th minute and 85th minute. Heptner led all players with a match-high four attempts on the day.

UC Davis closes out the regular season next week with a trip to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly on Wednesday (Oct. 28) at 7 p.m., before hosting UC Santa Barbara and celebrating the 2015 senior class in the regular season finale on Halloween at 2 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Field.
