Oct. 2, 2015 Complete Draws & Results
DAVIS, Calif. -- Juniors Bryce McKelvie and Alec Adamson, along with sophomore Everett Maltby, all advanced to the main draw quarterfinals in their respective singles brackets, while all four doubles pairings moved on during the morning session, highlighting the UC Davis men's tennis team's first day of play at the Aggie Invitational on Friday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on campus.
The top four seeds in each singles bracket advanced to the quarterfinals, including the second-seeded Adamson, who defeated Sacramento State's Uli Vollath in the Flight "A" round of 16 in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, following a first-round bye.
Adamson will take on Jacob Lagman of Saint Mary's in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m.
McKelvie, the top seed in Flight "B", also earned a first-round bye before dropping just one game in defeating Santa Clara's Jeffrey Liang, 6-0, 6-1, to advance. Maltby, the fourth seed in the flight, was the only Aggie to win a pair on the day, earning a pair of straight set wins over Pacific's Jack LaPlante, 7-6 (3), 6-4, and Sacramento State's Donald Hall, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
McKelvie will take on Pacific's Bernardo Oliveira, while Maltby will take on Santa Clara's Morgan Stone, in Saturday's quarters at 11 a.m.
James Wade, Brett Bacharach, Jesse Ross, Eli Whittle, and Tommy Lam, also all won their first round contests, but fell in the round of 16 to drop into the consolation bracket.
On the doubles side, the Aggies enjoyed a hugely successful day, advancing all four of their doubles teams (and all nine players overall) into Saturday's quarterfinals. The big win of the day came from the duo of Adamson and Wade, who upended the No. 2-seeded team of Trey Strobel and Anthony Tsodikov, 8-3, in their opening round clash in Flight "A", and advanced them to face the Sacramento State tandem of Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitalis.
Bacharach and Adam Levie defeated San Francisco's Marco Barretto and Alexander Santiago, 8-6, to move on in Flight "A", while the teams of Jesse Ross and Eli Whittle along with Tommy Lam and Bryce McKelvie each moved on in Flight "B". Maltby was the odd man out, but will team with Nevada's Mile Cilic in the quarterfinals against California's Gunther Matta and Ryan Shen after receiving a first-round bye.
Play continues at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning with doubles, while the singles quarterfinals begin at 11 a.m.
