NOTES
TO RECAP: UC DAVIS (9-12, 4-3) snapped a four-match win streak with a three-set loss at No. 8 Hawai'i on Friday... The Aggies struggled against the nation's leading block, with 12 of their 22 hitting errors coming as the result of Wahine stuffs... Freshman opposite Nicola Moore was a bright spot with her 6-0-13 (.462) attacking while sophomore Aima Eichie and junior Kendall Walbrecht combined for three blocks of their own... Freshman libero Malia Bolko collected a match-high 16 digs... The team's .079 average marks only the third time UC Davis has been held below .100 this season: .067 vs. Sacramento State (9/15) and .010 at Long Beach State (9/25)... The Aggies responded well after each previous occurrence: .254 on 50 kills after the Causeway match, .218 on 61 kills after the conference opener at Walter.
MIDTERM REPORT: At what is essentially the midway point of the conference season, senior Kaylin Squyres leads UC Davis at 4.58 kills per set in seven Big West dates, up from 4.38 in the preseason... Walbrecht went from 2.08 kps and .178 hitting in the first 14 matches to 3.67 and .225 in league play, mostly because of the position change... Eichie's hitting numbers have improved ÃÆ’¢â'¬" 0.97 kps/.152 hitting to 1.42 kps/.258 ÃÆ’¢â'¬" mostly since she was recovering from an injury to start the year... As a team, the Aggies are significantly up in aces (1.23 to 1.67) and digs (14.88 to 16.04), down in blocks (2.44 to 1.88); and largely even in kills (13.21 to 13.04), hitting average (.196 to .192), passing (.954 to .950).
MILESTONE WATCH: Squyres looks to jump from ninth to sixth among the all-time UC Davis career kills leaders... She enters the upcoming weekend with 1,044, putting her in range of Heidi Knapp (1,049 from 1988-91), Jen Bryan (1,052 from 1993-96) and Devon Damelio (1,058 from 2010-13)... Squyres also has 271 digs, needing 29 more to become just the second player in the Division I era to post both 300 kills and 300 digs in back-to-back seasons... Allison Whitson achieved the feat in 2011 and 2012; in fact, she went 400-plus kills and 300-plus digs each year.
STAT RANKINGS: Squyres paces the Big West Conference in kills per set (4.45) and total kills (338), although the margin ahead of Hawaii's Nikki Taylor (4.32) has closed... Bolko's 16 digs against the 'Bows lifted her average above 4.0 (4.04), good for third in the league... Eichie (1.19) and Kelechi Ohiri (1.05) are fourth and fifth in blocks behind the UH trifecta at the top... Junior Allie Wegener slipped to third in aces (0.33)... As a team, the Aggies rank second in blocks (2.26), third in digs (15.25) and aces (1.37).
UP NEXT: UC Davis continues road Big West Conference play with matches at UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday... The Aggies look to pick up their second non-neutral road win of the year... Their only previous win at an opponent's gym was the five-setter at Omaha on Sept. 9... The other four away wins were against neutral-site opponents in tournaments... UCR has live stats via SideArm while CSF offers both live audio and live stats… Both matches are streamed live at Big West TV… See above for links.
UC RIVERSIDE (6-14, 1-6) has dropped six straight Big West matches, a streak that started with the four-set loss at UC Davis back on September 30... Senior OH Helena Peric leads the Highlanders with 2.80 kills per set (171 total) while junior libero Maddie Hubbell holds the top spot on the Big West Conference digs leaderboard at 4.78 per... Peric tallied 14 kills at UC Santa Barbara to help the Highlanders snap a run of 11 consecutive sets lost.
CAL STATE FULLERTON (0-18, 0-6), which will face UC Irvine before hosting the Aggies, still seeks its first win of the year... The Titans had close calls in five-set losses at UC Riverside and UC Irvine in late September but then lost three straight sweeps (including one vs. UC Davis) to follow... Sophomore OH Kyra Hill leads CSF offensively with 2.37 kills per set while libero Paige Reed averages 3.69 dps.
HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS:
On Hawai'i: "Hawai'i is a very good team but we played very poorly. We didn't rise at all to the challenge. I'm disappointed that we weren't willing to put our best out there against a good team. I don't know if it was the crowd that affected us or Hawai'i being ranked as high as they are or their ability to put pressure on us, but I thought we came out of the gates pretty slow and never really recovered from it."
On UCR/CSF weekend: "We need to fight in every situation, up or down. We need to be competing in every point, playing in the moment, and not worrying about our results. That's the same thing we talked about before Hawai'i but we got caught up in other things. We want to start out strong and get better as the match goes on."
