Oct. 18, 2015 DAVIS, Calif. - Junior utility Lyle Kipp scored four goals while senior Sean Grab and redshirt freshman Brock Gordon each added three to help 10th-ranked UC Davis roll to a 20-7 win over Concordia of Irvine in non-conference men's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.
The Aggies improve to 12-6 overall. The Eagles fall to 4-12 for the year.
Kipp scored twice in UC Davis' run of five unanswered to start the contest, then added one more in each of the second and third quarters to match his career high. Gordon scored on a five-meter penalty shot in the second, finished a counterattack two minutes later, then buried an outside shot for his first collegiate hat trick. Grab scored twice out of two meters and once in transition for his second consecutive hat trick.
Cory Laidig hit a pair of 6-on-5 goals in the first quarter, both assisted by freshman Ido Goldschmidt, who then scored twice in the second frame. Redshirt freshman Nick Coufal had goals in each of the third and fourth quarters for his first multi-goal game as an Aggie.
Senior Santiago Rodriguez and freshman Spencer Hosch each hit two goals to lead CUI.
The Aggies dominated the game from wire to wire. Sophomore goalie Spencer Creed posted five saves in the first quarter to boost a 4-0 start. Grab won a battle at two meters to extend that lead to 5-0 before the Eagles got on the board on a Rodriguez power-play goal at 6:10 in the second. However, Goldschmidt answered with his own 6-on-5 goal to ignite a run of six straight for UC Davis. The Aggies led 11-2 at halftime.
Hosch and freshman utility John Roberts each connected from the perimeter to bring the Eagles to within a 14-5 deficit, but that proved the last time the Aggies' lead was smaller than double digits. UC Davis reserve goalie Jake Becker also enjoyed a highlight when he blocked a one-on-nobody attempt by Rodriguez early in the third.
The Aggies held the Eagles to just one goal in the fourth. Galli's outside shot fell in for the 20th goal at the 2:42 mark, tying the team's season high. UC Davis defeated Chapman, 20-4, at the NorCal Invitational in mid-September.
UC Davis returns to action at the Rodeo tournament in Santa Clara on Friday. The Aggies will face Brown, Bucknell, St. Francis and Harvard during the two-day event.
