DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman utility Sasa Antunovic scored five goals while senior Sean Grab and redshirt freshman Riley Venne each added hat tricks to lead No. 10 UC Davis from a 7-4 deficit to a 15-10 victory over No. 16 Santa Clara in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 10-6 for the year and remain undefeated in league play at 3-0. The Broncos fall to 5-14 overall and open WWPA action at 0-1.
Antunovic scored three goals in the second frame, one in the third, then tied his career high with a fifth goal in the fourth. Venne netted goals in each of the first three quarters while Grab posted two natural goals in the fourth to complete his hat trick. Grab also recorded four assists and four drawn exclusions in the contest.
For Santa Clara, junior Graham McClone had three goals, all in the first half. His first two propelled the Broncos to a 3-0 start while his third opened the second quarter at 4-1. SCU led by a 7-4 margin with less than two minutes before halftime thanks to a two-meter goal from Will Grant. Grab and Antunovic each struck in that last stretch to close the gap to 7-6 at halftime.
Freshman Ido Goldschmidt tied the contest at 7-7 with his goal from the five spot two minutes into the third, then Venne gave UC Davis its first lead when he converted a power play from set with 4:56 remaining. In all, the Aggies enjoyed a 9-1 run from the two-minute mark in the first half to the 6:34 mark of the fourth.
Senior center Wes Lincoln scored two goals while junior utility Lyle Kipp added one during the second half. Sophomore goalie Spencer Creed posted eight saves for UC Davis while Bronco senior Joe Maestri tallied 11 stops in front of the SCU cage.
The Aggies return to action for a non-conference tilt against Concordia of Irvine on Sunday. First sprint is at noon.
