Box Score
DAVIS, Calif. -- For the second time in four days, senior Lucas Mohageg sent the UC Davis faithful home happy as his diving header off a shot by teammate Evan Barrett five minutes into overtime lifted the host Aggies to a 3-2 victory over No. 24 Cal Poly on Wednesday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Field.
Unbeaten in its last three matches -- all of them decided in overtime -- UC Davis improved to 7-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Big West Conference play, notching its fifth win in seven chances (5-1-1) at home this season. The Mustangs, who entered the match unbeaten in their last six contests and ranked No. 24 in the nation according to Soccer America, suffered their first conference defeat of the season, falling to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.
"I didn't expect anything less," Head Coach Dwayne Shaffer said. "It was an exciting match for the fans to watch."
Mohageg's goal came in the 95th minute, lifting the Aggies after Cal Poly had rallied back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of second-half goals -- including the equalizer with just over five minutes to play. Barrett lost his defender from about 20 yards out and ripped a shot that was saved by the fingertips of Mustangs' goalkeeper Wade Hamilton.
The rebound, however, could not be corralled or cleared as Mohageg made a run down the left side caught the deflection on a bounce and headed home the winner to end the match. It was the seventh goal of the season, and the third game-winning goals for Mohageg, who also had the game-winner in overtime in the Aggies' win over UC Irvine on Oct. 10.
The seven goals by the Los Altos, California, native are the most by an Aggie since Quincy Amarikwa finished with 15 during the 2008 campaign.
"Lucas has some exceptional qualities," Shaffer said. "He's got a great brain, great physical size, and I'm really excited about how things have turned out for him this season."
A brace by freshman defender Roy Boateng staked the Aggies to an early lead, scoring a pair of goals just eight minutes apart in the first half. The first strike came off a long throw in that was headed back by Mohageg, deflected by a Cal Poly defender, but right to the head of Boateng, who tucked it inside the right post for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
In the 26th minute Boateng collected his first career multi-goal game with his fourth goal of the season as a long throw went uncleared by the defense back to Ryan Gross, who sent a ball to the back left post where Boateng was waiting to head it in for a 2-0 lead.
It was the first multi-goal game of the season for an Aggie and the first since Matt Wiesenfarth finished with two goals against Sacramento State on Nov. 3, 2012.
"For being a freshman, he's been outstanding for us," Shaffer said. "Not only is he playing well defensively, but he's contributing to our success offensively, getting on the end of some of our set pieces. I'm extremely happy for the young man. He and Lucas have been a great combo for us."
Cal Poly would not go away quietly, striking for a pair in the second half as Kip Colvey unleashed a shot that spun out of the goalkeepers hands to make it a one-goal match, and Chase Minter collected his fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute, sniping a shot to the upper right corner from the left side to tie the match.
The Mustangs thought they had the match tied seven minutes before Minter's goal, but a shot by Jared Pressley, who found himself open at the back left post, was called back due to offsides as play continued.
Cal Poly out-shot UC Davis, 15-13, for the match and 8-7 in shots on goal, led by five shots from Minter -- three of those on frame -- while four different Aggies finished with two shots apiece. Junior goalkeeper Armando Quezada finished with five saves for the match and got some help from the defense as Dashiell MacNamara cleared one off the line and away from danger on a shot by Colvey in the final minute of the first half.
The Aggies close out their season-long four-match home stand on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 3 p.m., welcoming Causeway Cup rival Sacramento State to the Aggie Soccer Field. The Hornets stunned No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, in the first of two meetings between the schools on Thursday in Sacramento.
